Kauai boys golf bumps Kapaa in Kauai Interscholastic Federation action


POIPU — Waimea High School golfer Koy Tsukayama soared to a 6-over 78 on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation golf round played at the Poipu Bay Golf Course under windy conditions.
Tsukayama’s score was the best individualist play and was two strokes better than Renyn Lee of Kauai High School, who led the Red Raider boys to the day’s team victory at 345.
The Kauai boys’ win bumps Kapaa, who earned top team honors during the season-opening round. The Kapaa boys finished with a 372, followed by Island School, which filled in the third berth with 381.
The Voyager boys were led by last year’s defending individualist champion, Lucas Summerhays, who carded an 81 to make the Top 3 Boys Individualist. Summerhays, who finished a strong boy’s basketball season for the Voyagers, was chasing a stroke behind Kauai High School’s Lee.
The wahine course was played under the same windy conditions; the Kapaa girls’ team repeated as winners with a score of 299, 23 strokes ahead of Kauai High.
School who finished with 322. Waimea High School girls rounded out the leaderboard at 389.
Lady Warrior Juliette O’Shaughnessy became a leading female individualist after finishing the Poipu outing with an 86, two strokes better than teammate Mehana Guy’s 88.
Amalia Abigania, last year’s strong Kauai female golfer, appeared on the leaderboard at No. 3 with a 93.
The KIF golfers next play the Princeville Makai Golf Club on Saturday. The first groupings tee off starting at noon.
