Discount Fabric Warehouse – 2018 Year in Review
As we start 2019 and begin to map out our projects for the year, we can’t help but take a moment to look back on 2018 and reminisce about all of the amazing ways our Discount Fabric Warehouse customers have helped us impact the lives of others. These are just a few of our favorite moments of 2018. Here’s to more beautiful projects in 2019!
#1 – Quilts for Charity
In May we did our first quilt drive to benefit various charities around the state. Here on the Big Island, the beautiful quilts donated were distributed to the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii and HOPE Services. Participants in our quilt drive not only donated some amazing quilts, but were also invited to stop in to our stores to learn new quilting techniques and patterns.
#2 – One Million Pillowcases in April
Pillowcases were the project of the month in April when we participated in the American Patchwork & Quilting One Million Pillowcase Challenge! More than 100 pillowcases were made and collected in our Discount Fabric Warehouse stores and distributed to various charities in our communities. This came just in time with the damaging floods and storms that hit the islands during the Spring that brought upon the need for bedding items such as pillowcases.
#3 – Dress A Child Around the Island
There are many children around the state who are unable to afford new clothing. They’re forced to attend school in clothes that may be too big or too small for them, or even tattered and damaged. In May we held a children’s clothing drive where we accepted handmade clothing for children of all ages, from the youngest little ones to teenagers. HOPE Services were able to benefit from some of these donations while much of the clothing items were used to supplement what was already available to kids in need through the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center
#4 – Curtains for Mini Homes in Puna
With all of the changes brought to the Puna area by the lava flow, we knew we needed to help in some way. When we heard about the mini homes that were being built, curtains seemed like a simple, yet lovely way to contribute. Customers and staff members worked diligently to have the sets of curtains completed for the new mini homes and some of our staff members went out to Puna to install curtain rods and the new curtains just in time for the new residents to move in.
#5 – Bags of Hope
One of the final big projects we took on in 2018, and one that we hope to continue through 2019, is our Bags of Hope project, which helped to provide duffle bags to foster children with the help of the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center. Dozens of beautifully made bags were lovingly created and donated, helping us spread the word that foster kids are not trash and deserve more than a plastic trash bag to hold their belongings.
