VOICES: Peace really does begin with me
Wednesday was the International Day of Peace. This world holy day also known as World Peace Day was initially proclaimed or instituted by the United Nations in 1981. The date of Sept. 21 was nailed down in 2001 (so 10 days after our 9-11 World Trade Center attack).
HOOSER: Council to give $7 million for 10 words
The Kaua‘i County Council agenda set for Wednesday, Sept. 21, includes Resolution 2022-28, which proposes to transfer to the Grove Farm Company approximately $7 million in taxpayer-funded property improvements, newly constructed buildings, related infrastructure, and nearly six acres of land — that same land that Grove Farm had previously given to the county.
Peace Corps act needs action now
Since 1961, more than 240,000 American Peace Corps volunteers have provided assistance in 142 country partners, fulfilling requests for assistance. PCVs and their work have changed innumerable lives for the better through projects that range from developing fish hatcheries to connecting patients to lifesaving medical treatments.

In 1981 the United Nations , with no objections, created, proclaimed September 21 of each year as THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE. The current Secretary General of U. N. Antonio Guterres, from Portugal, has requested a world wide cease fire on that day. The theme for this year is to end racism.

It’s Groundhog Day, as the Coco Palms Resort development is yet again on the Kaua‘i Planning Commission agenda. It’s been 30 years and the parade of various owners and developers continue to tell us to trust them, everything is on track, and they will soon be restoring the property to its former glory.

This year a bill, SB 2096, to advance the lowering of the blood alcohol concentration level, failed to get a hearing in either chamber of the state Legislature. It was a missed opportunity that could cost lives.

About 32% of all adults on Kauaʻi who could have voted did this past primary election. This means only 18,499 people voted for not only themselves, but for the entire population of Kauaʻi (73,298 total population; U.S. Census, 2020).

The Supreme Court’s recent rulings on abortions and guns shook the American body politic. As Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in his concurrence, the court’s decision to eliminate the constitutional right to an abortion was “a serious jolt to the legal system.”
