EDMONDS: Help is available to avoid eviction

You just got a notice from your landlord saying you’re evicted?!? NOW WHAT? Even more upsetting, your landlord has told or given you notice in writing that you have to be out in five days! Your mind is racing, and you think: Can they do that? Isn’t there a moratorium on evictions? Where can I go? What about my family? Are we going to be homeless?!?

EVSLIN: A really bad bill for Kaua‘i

Speaker of the House, Scott Saiki, has submitted HB 1286 for legislative approval. This bill essentially calls for a unified Safe Travels program statewide. It removes the power of individual mayors to opt out of the Safe Travels program and it also appears to disable the Governor’s ability to enact emergency legislation in regard to travel and COVID.

HOOSER: Coco Palms ‘defilement’ must stop

I awoke the other morning angry and thinking about the ongoing desecration occurring at the bottom of the hill. I’ve been driving by that place every day for the past 40 years. Since 1992 it has been a total wreck. The weeds grow tall, the buildings sit in what seems like a perpetual state of semi-demolishment, and every few years there are fires.

VOICES: The Senate must convict, disqualify Trump

After months of hyping conspiracy theories and pressuring election officials to falsify results, Donald Trump incited a mob to storm the US Capitol and stop Congress from certifying the presidential election. If this does not warrant conviction in his upcoming Senate trial, what possibly could?

VOICES: Maka‘i Golf Club’s 50th birthday may be its last

Recently, I volunteered as the Kaua‘i North Shore Lions teed off for their annual golf tournament to raise money for scholarships for students in our area. Scores of community members came together at the Princeville Maka‘i golf course, which once again provided the perfect setting. The tournament raised more than $53,000—the most in its history.

HOOSER: Abolish the ADC – Support the Auditor

The state auditor recently completed a long-awaited audit of the operations of the state Agribusiness Development Corporation, declaring: “We found that ADC has done little — if anything — to facilitate the development of agricultural enterprises…the ADC has yet to develop an agribusiness plan…ADC did not follow the state procurement process…the ADC has yet to provide the necessary leadership to facilitate the transition of agricultural lands…after almost 30 years since its creation.”

VOICES: Kupuna need assistance in crisis, too

In response to the article by Stephanie Shinno in The Garden Island, Jan. 17, 2021, titled “A crisis within a crisis,” I would like to commend the county agencies, County Council and nonprofits that have joined together in the effort to house the homeless.
