CRITTER: One of the world largest coral discovered in Palau
Coral reefs around the world have been reported to be dying due to an increase in sea water temperatures but in some locations the corals are thriving!
ISLAND HISTORY: Nanaulu, the original discoverer of the Hawaiian Islands
According to interpretations of Hawaiian legends and radiocarbon dating estimations, it is speculated that sometime during 300-600 A.D. a Polynesian chief named Nanaulu became the first person to discover the uninhabited Hawaiian Islands.

Kauai-based forest bird film premieres today on PBS
HONOLULU — PBS Hawaii announced that “When Silence Becomes The Song” will air on today starting at 8:30 p.m. There will be a re-broadcast on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. on the PBS channel.
Dedication marks the start of Makahiki
LIHUE — Franklin Kakazu of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints helped officiate the dedication of the tiki that was carved in place by Kumu Kamakana Bray and na haumana of Kauai Maoli Woodcarving Academy.

Malachai Waechter was more interested in the Florence Tavares cookies (no new flavors, this time) on Sunday during the monthly The Beach House craft fair (the next one is on Dec. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) where the wind was blowing at a good clip (The Salty Wahine Gourmet Hawaiian Salt crew anchored their tent to a coconut tree to keep everything stable).

Kauai Marathon shares $30,000 in awards
POIPU — Jeff Sacchini, founder of The Kauai Marathon 16 years ago, said on Friday that giving out the checks to Kauai nonprofit groups is the best part of the marathon.
“The SpongeBob Musical” opens on Sunday
LIHUE — The Hawaii Children’s Theatre, or HCT, announced the production of “The SpongeBob Musical,” which opens on Sunday and runs through Nov. 30 at Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.

Melissa McFerrin Warrack said her son Finnigan cut his hair for his role as a Bikini Bottom newscaster in The SpongeBob Musical that opens on Sunday at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall, as the annual Hawaii Children’s Theatre food bank fundraiser. The curtain rises at 3 p.m. at the show where theater goers get special admission when accompanied by a contribution of “shelf-stable” food or cash.

In her book, “In Love and War: The World War II Courtship Letters of a Nisei Couple,” pub. 2015, author Melody M. Miyamoto Walters published the courtship letters of her grandparents Yoshiharu Ogata (1919-2007) of Kauai, and Naoko Tsukiyama Ogata (1917-2022) of Honolulu, which they exchanged during 1941-1943.

Kudos to the Hanapepe Pop Warner Colts and the Hanapepe Youth Baseball League on coordinating the two-day Hanapepe’s Biggest Little Carnival (Alden Pablo said it’s the “Fifth-and-a-Half!”), where Waimea High School students Kristan Raposas and Nia Pablo (that’s Alden’s daughter) spearheaded a $15,000 contribution to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The presentation was a result of the Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Run that was Nia’s senior project.

In his book, “Kauai: As It Was in the 1940s and ’50s,” Mike Ashman (1921-2018) wrote nostalgically about prices on Kauai in 1940, the year he first arrived on the Garden Island to become an announcer at KTOH radio.
