Wow! The holidays are here, and people couldn’t wait for December as Sarah Tochiki (wait until after the holidays for the Kauai All-Island Band!) unleashed a flurry of holiday cheer Friday night with the three musical groups from Kauai Community College that brought out the beauty of the new Bose sound system (you could hear the music from as far away as Macy’s!) at Kukui Grove Center.

It’s a good thing we have two mayors — Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. is expected to be at the Waimea Town tree lighting, Saturday evening, said Penny Young, and Mayor-elect Derek Kawakami is scheduled to be at the St. Rafael’s lighting festival in Koloa at the same time, said Brenda Sameshima. OK, so which one do we choose to go to?

What better way for Santa to be pulled on his surfboard/sleigh than by a flock of chickens and roosters, said Elizabeth Freeman of the Festival of Lights that will enjoy a soft opening Saturday at the Historic County Building in Lihue.

Liko Pereira (how come there is a delay in some smartphones?), Harriet Watanabe and County Council Chair Mel Rapozo didn’t let the 25th Kauai Christmas Parade stop them from watching the Kapaa High School football team battle the Lahainaluna Lunas for the First Hawaiian Bank Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II football title Saturday afternoon at Kukui Grove Center.

Happy birthday to Wendy Oyama (great job with the tie-died outfits and the Pokemon headgear!), who spent her special day serving up turkey lunches at the Kapaa Interfaith Association Thanksgiving luncheon at the All Saints Episcopal Church gym in Kapaa!

Kudos to Fred Atkins, Chef Johnny Saguid, and the Luau Kalamaku kitchen crew volunteers for stepping up and helping The Salvation Army Capt. Bill Simon with the annual The Salvation Army community Thanksgiving luncheon that is being served up today from 10:30 a.m. at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall!

Was it county Planning Department Director Michael Dahilig’s birthday? Whatever the reason, congratulations to the coordinators of the Rice Street Block Party on a great event for filling the section of Rice Street from the intersection of Kalena/Hardy streets to Umi street with revelers of all ages!

Nalani Blane Kealaiki (yes, she’s Sarah Blane’s sister!) said she’s planning on coming back to Kauai for the Lights on Rice holiday parade and, hopefully, get invited by Sarah to walk in the parade, too!

Jim Benkert said the next time you see Bikes on Rice (Street) will be the holiday ride when the bike riders light up their metal steeds and participate in the annual Lights on Rice holiday parade, Friday, Dec. 7 (saved your spots, yet?), starting at 6:30 p.m.

Yikes! It’s Wednesday already and Sharon Lasker of the Regency at Puakea invites people to their Fourth annual Holiday Craft Fair and Rummage Sale (they got good stuff) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There’s even lunch of a Portuguese bean soup, cornbread and water available … Missy Saiki said the All Saints craft fair is Dec. 8 (not 3!) in Kapaa.

Happy Camper for Monday, November 12, 2018

The craft fair circuit (Phyllis Andrade — she’s the Rancher’s Daughter’s mom! — already did the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital event) is in full swing with less than two weeks beforeThanksgiving.

Happy birthday to Reeya Misra, who celebrated her second birthday Friday night with her family enjoying a special Lappert’s treat amidst the excitement of the Flavors of Poipu at The Shops at Kukuiula (how can you sleep through the exciting performance of Falling Down Romance? Reeya’s sister Akiya did just that after a full day of enjoying Kauai’s beaches.).

Happy Camper for Friday, November 9, 2018

Kudos to Jody Kjeldsen of the Poipu Beach Resort Association, Stacie Chiba Miguel and Helaine Perel of The Shops at Kukuiula, and all those vendors from the Kauai Culinary Market (where was Johnny Gordines, Bill Spitz, Laurie Ho and the Kauai County Farm Bureau gang?) on a great mystery ingredient (crickets never got so much attention) cookoff!

Happy Camper for Wednesday, November 7, 2018

Kudos to Alden Pablo (Hanapepe Pop Warner Association) and Ryan Lee (Hanapepe Youth Baseball Association) and all the many hands for putting on the Hanapepe’s biggest little carnival that spread out across the Hanapepe Stadium complex over the weekend!

If you missed the Kauai Veterans Day Parade (kudos to Russell Maeda, Gen. Mary Kay Hertog and the numerous hands that make the parade possible!) Saturday in Kapaa, there is still the annual Veterans Day service coming up Sunday, starting at 11 a.m. at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.

Congratulations to Virginia Beck, Maryanne Kusaka, Lila Metzger and Dr. Mehana Vaughan for all they do for the community of Kauai! Chef Judy Capertina of Haole Girl Island Sweets (yes, she was part of the inaugural Thursday Afternoon Street Market at Kukui Grove Cetner, too!) had coconut macaroons on hand for the Halloween edition of the Kauai Culinary Market at The Shops at Kukuiula Wednesday, where little trick-or-treaters were seen (Helaine Perel said they were doing the Teal Pumpkin Project, too!), and Stacie Chiba-Miguel allowed a sneak peek at the non-candy treats in store for people who can’t have candy.

Happy Camper for Monday, October 29, 2018

People (even Chef Sam Choy came in for the busy weekend!) were out in force as the four girl Cub Scouts — Isabel Tumpap, Ashlei Thompson (was dad officiating or working?), Summer Cope and Grace Lopez — from Pack 148 were part of the Kauai United Way Walk-a-thon (Charlie Okamoto said Nellie’s birthday was Friday!).
