Happy New Year to Risa Clemmons, who was hard at work Friday at the county’s Sunshine Market at Vidinha Stadium (Glenna Ueunten had some mizuna left over from all that New Year ozoni, and the citrus is looking really good!).

Happy birthday to Clammie at the 7-Eleven in Lihue, who got the day off on New Year’s, and mahalo to Daisy at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital (congratulations on getting the Kauai New Year’s baby!), who helped coordinate coverage of the new 2019 arrival.

Kudos to Gerald Hirata, Roberta Yanagawa and the Kauai Soto Zen Temple Zenshuji and the Kapaa Hongwanji Mission on their respective mochi-making efforts to keep the New Year traditions alive on Kauai! Kim Murakami said he’s retired now so his entire family (even Kalani came home from California to help) gets involved with the church, and Brian Yamamoto had his Okinawa exchange students, Natsuki Morii and Kana Iwamoto, helping at the Kapaa gathering.

Auwe! No ice sculpting demonstration following the Thursday afternoon street fair at Kukui Grove Center, as major cracks developed in the block of ice. Chef Wally Nishimura decided it would be too dangerous to proceed despite waiting for a period of time.

Happy retirement to Helaine Perel of The Shops at Kukuiula (and to Val Rynda of FM97!), who was enjoying her final Kauai Culinary Market Wednesday, stopping to chat with Aida Dolfo, who had guests Jeff, Carson, Lauren and Tristy Tara of California in tow, enjoying the aroma of those sliders before hitting the next level.

Mahalo to Juvie Bercasio for “the itchies,” and kudos to Josie Pablo (she’s the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation Kauai Region recreation director) and the entire Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital ohana on a great Christmas party for its residents and their families Friday evening (yep, it got moved from the daytime so everyone could come).

It was a good thing to have the smart phone Tuesday when a beautiful rainbow formed over Hanapepe Stadium during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation boys soccer game between Waimea and Kauai high schools.

Mahalo to Vance Pascua and the Ainofea ohana for the new paddling outfits, said Kauai High coach Lori Parraga during the opening of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation paddling season at the Wailua River Saturday. Parraga said Ainofea is one of the sponsors for the Raider teams’ outfits.

Angela Ventura (she’ll be helping with the Kauai Gymnastics Academy free showcase at Kukui Grove Center starting at 1 p.m. today) used to hang out in the stroller while her mom Debra Ventura used to help cook at the West Kauai church. Debra was among the helpers with Becky Komaki and Priscilla Badua at the Hawaii Government Employees Association Kendall Scholarship fundraising (no kadomatsu this year) booth at the Kauai Museum’s Annual Christmas Craft Fair — kudos to Gerald Ako and Dale Shimomura for doing another bang-up job with the effort. Dr. Kelly Robb (she’s got a set of twins coming!) was looking for a tree after all that lumpia.

Elvrine Chow wanted to learn how to do the holiday cards using Kauai’s dirt, and Edwin Vea (if you missed the West KauaiUnited Methodist Church – Kaumakani craft fair, you missed out on an opportunity to visit the church that is in the middle offormer cane fields) had some old-style Christmas wreaths using macadamia nut leaves (you can make it really old style bypainting them gold or silver) and dried koa pods.
