Kung Hee Fat Choy! Wow! No one says it quite like Diane Rubio (she and Dan Cruces are Falling Down Romance!), and she even did pieces with a Chinese violin during the Flavors of Kukuiula celebrating the Chinese New Year (350 lai see envelopes — for monetary offerings for good luck — were not enough?) at The Shops at Kukuiula Friday.

Congratulations to Pillare Mukai (her in-laws had the old Mukai Store in Hanapepe next to the fire station), who started work as the assistant manager at The Shops at Kukuiula Friday! Pillare was checking out the place with Stacie Chiba Miguel ahead of the Flavors of Kukuiula that celebrates the Chinese Year of the Pig today starting at 6 p.m.

Kumu Sabra Kauka didn’t only do the blessing to open up the 2019 OceanFest. She was also one of the panelists on the Nualolo Kai restoration discussion. Kudos to Jean Souza (she just got back to work following the government shutdown!) and Malia Nobrega-Olivera on pulling this year’s event together with the help of Melissa McFerrin-Warrack and David Sosner.

Congratulations to Fred Cowell and his Kauai Coffee ohana on the sold-out celebration of Kauai Coffee 2 at the Coconut MarketPlace inWaipouli during the Kauai Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours (now we know why Carol Manera Texeira couldn’t make the Kauai Interscholastic Federation basketball games) Thursday!

Happy Camper for Friday, February 1, 2019

Bev Brody has been in the health-service business for 118 years (you never know what kind of stuff you learn at Walk to School), according to an e-correspondence she got from Linkdin. Congratulations to Principal Wendy Castillo and all those St.Theresa School people for hooking up with Bev and Lee Steinmetz to host their first Walk to School event!

Ashlei Thompson, one of four Cub Scouts in Cub Pack 148 sponsored by the Lihue Christian Church, was one of the Cubs advancing after edging out Isabel Gampon during the pack’s Raingutter Regatta Sunday.

The books just arrived Thursday, and Tiana Kamen (congratulations on your master’s degree in nutrition!) was so excited to bring the “Keiki to Farm” book intended for ages 3 to 9, pre-K to third grade to launch at the Kauai Community Market Saturday at Kauai Community College in Puhi (welcome home, Bev Pang, who got to run into Annette Baptiste!).

Happy Camper for Sunday, January 27, 2019

Kudos and mahalo to Markeeta Smith of Kauai Fresh Farms, who spent her Friday morning working with Kelvin Moniz of the Kauai Independent Food Bank (they got some, too) in delivering (“a significant amount of”) fresh salads to the U.S. Coast Guard (Clay Wilbanks and Sean Keeman ran into Markeeta at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor parking lot), the Transportation Security Administration, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Lihue Airport for those federal workers working without paychecks.

Congratulations to Waimea High School cheerleaders Ashlyn Agena and Zyana Vea on being accepted to cheer at this year’s Polynesian Bowl that was contested Saturday at Aloha Stadium on Oahu! Tori Kagawa said this year is the first time the Polynesian Bowl had cheerleaders.

Happy Camper for Sunday, January 20, 2019

Kudos to Mayor Derek Kawakami on installing the Express Line, and the number system of servicing for the Department of Finance Motor Vehicle Registration division! Perhaps a similar situation could take place when lines form at the camping sites stations so patrons can take a number and go visit the DougOut instead of waiting in the lines.

Happy Camper for Friday, January 18, 2019

Kudos to Terry-Ann Moses and the Friendship House ohana on hosting the annual employers’ appreciation luncheon at the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club Wednesday (and congratulations to the Marriott for hosting the event each year). Kurt Nagata did a fabulous job as master of ceremonies (what do you call bears with no teeth?), and it’s always a pleasure to watch The Friendlies perform.

Happy Camper for Wednesday, January 16, 2019

Congratulations to Katy Matayoshi, Helga Efhan and the Mahelona Hospital Auxiliary on the rededication of the Mahelona Hospital thrift store! Hospital residents couldn’t wait to check out the offerings even before the refreshments, and who made those ono andagi?

Happy Camper for Monday, January 14, 2019

Happy birthday, Michael Carle, who had a photo of himself published in the Kauai Times (how many of you remember that newspaper?) 24 years ago when he was 1 year old, said his mother Monica Carle.

Happy Camper for Sunday, January 13, 2019

The Bernice Hundley Gym welcomed 2019 with the return of Michael Drake (he had a nice reunion with Marlene Moises, who retired from the county’s Finance Department Driver Licensing division) and his ohana (Lyah Kama Drake was stocking up on the plate lunches for dinner!) during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation boys basketball games Thursday night.

Peter Sterne of the Garden Island Arts Council said proceeds from the Taylor Camp movie, showing tonight at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center, will help the GIAC with its planned art center on Rice Street (Seth Womble completed the mural fronting the Kauai Beer Company over the weekend), as well as bring in more musicians for its E Kanikapila Kakou program that starts Jan. 21 with Waipuna.
