Annette Hashimoto was happy that participants at the Kauai Chamber of Commerce Women Leading with Impact Symposium had ample time to browse through the offerings of the vendors (one of them even won a giveaway prize!) set up between the panel discussions and breakout sessions led by Kauai’s women.

Kudos to Microsoft (they brought over a lot of technicians, including some from The Microsoft Store on Oahu!), and Leslie Wilkins and the Maui Economic Development Board for making the DigiCamp a reality Thursday at the Kapaa Middle School.

Happy Camper for Wednesday, April 24, 2019

Yikes! It’s that time of the year, again — the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort hosts its pancake breakfast buffet (all you can eat, if you sit-in) Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m. benefiting the Kauai Visitor Industry Charity Walk (this is coming up, May 11!)…

Happy Camper for Sunday, April 21, 2019

Kaito Newbill of Wailua has his Tuesday routine down pat, starting with storytime with Victoria Lam, the children’s librarian at the Lihue Public Library, said his grandmother, Joanne Fujio. From there, it’s off to the farmers’ market (check out the state Department of Health ladies who shop there, too) at the Historic County Building (it’s walking distance), where aunty Glenna Ueunten has his tray (vendor Erlinda Ballesteros calls it “magic”) that he plays with while grandma shops and talks story.

There is only one word that describes the Relay for Life (organized and coordinated by Patti Ornellas — where was Melissa Ragasa? — Wes Perreira (he was the event lead), and all those volunteers who stepped forward for the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society — WOW!

Mike Dandurand has been doing DJ duty with the March for Babies for a long time, too long to remember. Kudos to Juno Apalla on hosting a great event where about 200 walkers surpassed the March of Dimes fundraising goal, thrilling Pauline Togawa who flew in from Honolulu for the event.

Happy Camper for Monday, April 8, 2019

Saturday was not just the 17th annual Sequenced Transition to Education in the Public Schools Parent and Child Fair. It was Jeannie Odo Day (well deserved!!!) as proclaimed by Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami (he said Odo was his first boss when he reached age to start working for pay) at Kukui Grove Center (congratulations to Buddah’s Toy Box on your blessing!).

Avery Ortal of Boy Scout Troop 334, sponsored by Holy Cross Church, took advantage of the weekly Kauai Culinary Market (the Soup Girls — they said the Soup Lady is retired — had corn chowder, Ron Wood) to sell his Makahiki tickets (Boy Scout Simon Oyama sold all his during the Flavors of Kukuiula benefiting the Charity Walk at The Shops at Kukuiula!) for the event that takes place Saturday next to the Garden Fair at Kauai Community College.

Kathy Kovala is still rocking and rolling after all these years. She was hosting an open house (Barbara Gusman took the opportunity to try some Oki’s Box Lunch fried chicken) where she demonstrated and talked about the rock-and-roll technique she uses with watercolor…she’s got a series of classes this week at the Kauai Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center.

Kudos to Moani Tolentino (she’s the new Hawaiian culture director at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa!), who got help from Sandi Quinsaat in hosting a great, two-day Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole (the state and county are closed Tuesday for the Kuhio holiday) Celebration (we need to call it a “ho‘olaule‘a”)!
