Kudos to all (!!!) the organizers of the three major Fourth of July celebrations — the Freedom Fest (mahalo, Tom Clements and Sara Sexton, and Mel Rapozo had the right idea — rent a cottage!), the Kekaha Fourth of July celebration (kudos Sam Bustillos, Darryl Kua and company — the West Kauai Methodist culinary offerings — they come to Lihue for the Lights on Rice holiday parade! — are a tradition), and the Kauai Hospice Concert in the Sky (great job, Tricia Yamashita, who balances between being the acting executive director and the concert event coordinator!).

Happy Camper for Friday, July 5, 2019

Sharleen Andrade Balmores (she’s The Rancher’s Daughter!) is the sixth generation of a Kauai paniolo ‘ohana, and is ready to start the Paniolo Heritage celebration that comes with the Koloa Plantation Days (they start the celebration early with the annual Tree Tunnel cleaning, July 13, and Movies in the Park at the Poipu Beach Park, July 12!).

Happy Camper for Wednesday, July 3, 2019

Larry Rivera (nope, no Charlie Perreira, here) said he didn’t get to Kauai Kau Wela until “the big show,” Friday night, and could still make the Dickie Chang (congratulations on 25 years of Wala‘au with Bruce Smalling!) shindig (Happy Canada Day, Bev Brody!) at the Kilohana luau pavilion where June Jones made a trip to Kauai to congratulate Dickie.

Happy Camper for Monday, July 1, 2019

Ferdinand Dosono of Kauai Kim Chee is ready for the Fourth of July (he’ll be one of the vendors at the Kauai Hospice Concert in the Sky — Tricia Yamashita was cruising the Kauai Community Market, too) as he fired up the grill with some spicy pork at Kauai Community College Saturday.

Happy Camper for Sunday, June 30, 2019

Eva Domingo (did she win?) was the first one to finish the networking bingo game (drank coffee, Fred Cowell!) when ProService Hawaii partnered with the Kauai Chamber of Commerce for the business after hours that got forced inside from the Puna Court at the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club Thursday when Mother Nature decided it was time to open the faucets (we needed the rain after all that heat and dry spell!).

Happy Camper for Friday, June 28, 2019

Aw, couldn’t ask Ron Wood about the senior softball games, Paul Curtis — Ron is off to a family reunion and missed out onthe uncertain weather that fueled a huge turnout to the Kauai Culinary Market (Johnny and Terry Gordines were sold out inthe first hour!) Wednesday afternoon, where Chyson Aguano opened his Sauced Kauai table.

Happy Camper for Monday, June 24, 2019

What a crazy weekend — Kim Coco Iwamoto came down to spend time with grandma at the Lihue Hongwanji bon dance (the nishime plate was the first to sell out, and the flying saucer lines were manageable) before handing out lollipops at the Kauai Pride Parade and Festival (did you see the feather eyelashes?).

Happy Camper for Sunday, June 23, 2019

Happy birthday, Mark Perriello, who celebrated his special day with nearly 400 people at the Kauai Chamber of Commerce second quarter general membership meeting presented by Corteva Agriscience and featuring Hawaii farm-to-plate food at the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club Thursday.

Happy Camper for Friday, June 21, 2019

One of the priceless things about the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital beach outings (Happy birthday, Efrenia Pagulayan of Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital!) is the appearance of Gary Smith and the Kilauea Social Club (gonna have to settle for postage-stamp-sized photo here), who volunteers with entertainment that everyone can enjoy!

Happy Camper for Monday, June 17, 2019

Happy anniversary to Lauren Guest and Matthew Duncan! Lauren was busy helping Hanamaulu residents with filling out surveys for the improvements to Laukona Park when it dawned on her that it was her anniversary.

Happy Camper for Sunday, June 16, 2019

Tristan David, Cindy Claudia and Tristan Graham all flew in from Puna (remember the volcano?) and went straight to The Storybook Theatre of Hawaii in Hanapepe Friday night.

Happy Camper for Friday, June 14, 2019

Congratulations to Andy Chang, his daughter Patricia Moad (she’s the “mama” of Mamahune’s), and the Hilton Garden Inn Kauai Wailua Bay, on the opening of Mamahune tiki (they even have a volcano!) bar that now graces an “unused” portion of the Wailua resort located “where the river meets the sea.” The facility is open seven day a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Happy Camper for Wednesday, June 12, 2019

Good job and kudos to Aaron and Natsumi (she was really stepping up when Aaron became ill!) Yamasato and all the volunteers (Chuck Brady said he was really working for his money!) for the first comic convention that transformed the ballroom at the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club into a fabulous scene of pop culture!

Happy Camper for Monday, June 10, 2019

Kudos to Lyah Kama-Drake, The Royal Order of Kamehameha (Chad Schimmelfennig was busy running water to Josh Fukino and Mark Rossi’s ku‘i group!), the Kauai Museum, and Wallis and Shana Punua and their halau in hosting the King Kamehameha Day Celebration that was streamlined to include the significant procession and protocol at the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club (mahalo to the Kauai Marriott crew for running all that extra water needed to beat the heat — and it’s not even summer yet!).

Happy Camper for Sunday, June 9, 2019

Could the model sailing canoe being worked on by Keala Kai be the child of Hokule‘a and Namahoe? Keala (you never know the treasures you find on side trips while on assignment) said the sailing canoe model (it was created using wood upcycled by people who “put it in his bucket” while working on the Hokule‘a and Namahoe) was part of his shop’s decorations, and he was convinced by a visitor from Kentucky to let it go.

Happy Camper for Friday, June 7, 2019

Charlmaine Bulosan (Miss Kauai Filipina scholarship pageant coming up Saturday, June 15!) was one busy lady, starting with the 30th Taste of Hawaii presented by the Rotary Club of Kapaa (great job, Rotarians!) at Smith’s Tropical Paradise in Wailua (great job with the garden decorations, Wendee Van Geisen, and Pat Gegen and John Harder of Zero Waste Kauai had a real workout!).

Happy Camper for Monday, June 3, 2019

The Rev. Kosen Ishikawa is getting excited about the special guests from Japan he’ll be hosting when the Koloa Jodo Mission (the Jodo Shu in Hawaii celebrates its 125th anniversary and five generations of members this year!) hosts its bon dance Friday and Saturday (traditional bon dance starts at 7:30 each night).
