One day, we’ll figure out how to do those toenail treatments — like those enjoyed by three generations including Edie Rhind, Niely Carroll (she had the day off Friday!), and Paula Wicall — at Kukui Grove Center.

Sam Potter is one of the students in the first classes that started when Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School opened its doors 20 years ago. Kudos to Debra Badua and her staff on the great special educational opportunities that celebrates the future by looking at the past.

Jan Rudinoff said grandma didn’t sign the form so he couldn’t be photographed while Paula Rudinoff shopped for honey with the vendors (when is Manu Trugillo off to college?) at the Kauai Community Market (the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair is coming up from Thursday, Aug. 15!) before going to visit their granddaughter across from Bronson Yadao and the bromeliads.

What a hectic weekend as Kauai recovers from no less than two parades (Isabel Gampon was in the historic Koloa Plantation Days parade, too), a state scholarship pageant (congrats to Isabel Gampon on being named the 2019 Miss Hawaii Filipina!), and more.
Happy Camper for Monday, July 29, 2019
Who would’ve known? Isabel Gampon started out Saturday morning accompanying the 2018 Miss Hawaii Filipina Joylene Tabon in the Koloa Plantation Days, and before going to bed, was crowned the 2019 Miss Hawaii Filipina…congratulations, Isabel, Chris and Ray!

Kudos to Seann Hartnell and his American Savings Bank ‘ohana at the Hokulei Village branch on hosting an enjoyable Kauai Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours (Santa Phil Worwa went from the Canada shirt to popcorn socks, and ask him about the holes).
Happy Camper for Friday, July 26, 2019
Dann Seki (isn’t he the doctor on the television Hawaii Five-O series?) talked about Growing Up in Hawaii to a capacity crowd (Ada Koene left the Kauai Culinary Market early to get a good seat) during the Koloa Plantation Days celebration (the big parade is Saturday!) at the Koloa Public Library.

What? You nevah hear about Frank, Cousin Bertram, and the Night Marchers?
Happy Camper for Monday, July 22, 2019
Barbara Natland said we’ll be doing another moon trip in about five years. Barbara was part of the Science on the Mall that celebrated the golden anniversary (has it been 50 years, already?) of the moon walk at Kukui Grove Center, where Godwin Valdez and Ronnie Toki were cruising to the Aloha Friday night entertainment.

Did you ever see a pineapple tree? The crew at the Koloa Landing Resort created one to announce its dessert offerings of pineapple upside down cake and strawberry shortcake during the Kauai Chamber of Commerce Mayor’s Luncheon that was sponsored by Gather Federal Credit Union — great job with the financial literacy presentation, Stephenie Brown!

Happy birthday to Malathi Tuers, who celebrated her special day with friends (Jo Nunes is a really akamai farmers’ market shopper; Rocky and Dely Sasaki of Kauai Island Ministries have their “From Death to Life” youth rally coming up Aug. 2!) at the Kauai Culinary Market (it’s on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at The Shops at Kukuiula), where Jessika Montoya Cristobal is already looking forward to being part of “Chicago” that follows the Hawaii Children’s Theatre’s “Frozen, Jr.”) that plays this weekend at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.

Happy belated birthday to Ms. Hawaii United States Amanda Smith, who celebrated her birthday on July 4! She was so busy with engagements she missed out on the Kauai Hospice Concert in the Sky. But she broke away Saturday to help with the Back to School Bash (kudos to ALL the organizers — it’s a good thing Mryvie Buster has a loud voice — on a highly-successful event!) where she did a variety of chores, including helping distribute the free backpacks of school supplies.

Bon dances resume after a week’s rest to celebrate Independence Day. This week’s dances move to the Kapaa Jodo Mission (does that mean that Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital will have some of their residents present since it’s just down the hill, and has Mike Teruya returned from his European trip?) where the Rev. Kosen Ishikawa will be presiding over the short bon service acknowledging our ancestors.
Happy Camper for Wednesday, July 10, 2019
Yes, it’s Back to School Bash Saturday from 9:30 a.m. (that’s when the Fun Fair starts! The registration line forms even earlier!) at the Kukui Grove Center.
Happy Camper for Monday, July 8, 2019
Priscilla Simao is learning the ropes after being in Rice Camp (she loved the Kauai Hospice Concert in the Sky fireworks!) for just one month — those Westside kupuna catch the 7:30 a.m. Kauai Bus in time to be able to shop at the Kauai Community Market at Kauai Community College on Saturday, and then catch the bus (they clean their vegetables while waiting) home after a day of shopping.
