Did Gov. Tsugumasa Muraoka of the Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, and his delegation of visitors (kudos to Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, Sue Kanoho and all the dignitaries on the tree-planting at Matsuri Kauai to strengthen the Kauai-Yamaguchi Sister City relationship) get to see what happened to the Lihue Civic Center surroundings after the sun went down Friday?

Congratulations to Myrvie Buster and her Garden Island Federal Credit Union ohana that hosted a garage sale benefiting the Kauai United Way (there’s still time to get involved with the Kauai United Way Walk-a-thon coming up Saturday, Oct. 26, ahead of the weekend celebrating Halloween!) a few days ahead of International Credit Union Day (Maren Rasay said GIFCU is baking stuffs for their members!) … and that pen works really good!

There are still a few more days remaining to check out the artwork at the 34th annual ART Kauai (the exhibit runs through Oct. 25) at the Kauai Society of Artists gallery at the Kukui Grove Center (if you visit during the weekdays, the Zombies are all in school) where you not only get to see great art, but meet the artists who are doing gallery sittin

Joyce Nagata of the Kilauea Senior Center said her dad, Seichi Akagi, learned how to paint when he was 80 years old through the senior center. He did a variety of artwork before leaving us. Joyce put together some of those classic pieces in a unique Christmas tree that got some nibbles in the “auction” taking place at the Kilauea Senior Center table Saturday during the Kauai Senior Craft and Food Fair at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue.

The rains that dumped on Friday afternoon couldn’t stop Val Faford from Hale ‘Opio from continuing on with the Bully Free Concert and Youth Resource Fair at Kukui Grove Center (yes, Kauai Police Department was there, too) in the on-again, off-again heavy rain.
Happy Camper for Thursday, October 11, 2019
Val Faford of Hale ‘Opio was having a lot of fun processing the “passports” from keiki during the appearance of Uncle Wayne (and friend) who had the Island School preschool and kindergarteners cemented to the floor during the Family Fun Day at Kukui Grove Center Wednesda

Who would think that popcorn (it’s the gourmet kine!) would go with comic books and other collectibles, but Sumiko’s was doing a thriving business Saturday when Kukui Grove Center hosted a Spooktacular Saturday comic and collectibles swap coordinated by Bubbah’s Toy Box…the Cantu family

The Tres Amigos — David Johnens, Ramon Martinez and Johnny Mitsis — had no problem filling their event card Saturday while they welcomed the day in the cool (it helped with the morning rains, too) outside the Lihue Neighborhood Center, where The Memory Keepers (the county Agency on Elderly Affairs’ team in the Alzheimer’s Walk benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association) were hosting their annual rummage sale with Donna Olivas Kaohi (she couldn’t join Jim Jung and Grace Delos Reyes at the Kukui Grove Center children’s story hour), Johnny Yago (he was out of his active living gear), Rose Manago and Patricia Gonsalves.

Kudos to Josie Pablo and her ohana from both the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital and the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital (even Steve Kline got to enjoy the festivities) on the biggest SMMH Breast Cancer Walk to date (this was the seventh year they’ve done this)!

So, are you going to the East Kauai Lions Club (first!) spaghetti luncheon (yes, they have to-go plates, too!) Sunday at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall?

Welcome back, Branch Harmony and Auhea (it’s a vizsla dog Branch got in New Zealand) to the Koloa Sunshine Market where those Koloa pineapple are out of season, and Glenna Ueunten just happened to have one remaining bag of lilikoi (it’s out of season, too).
Happy Camper for Monday, September 30, 2019
Kudos to Melissa McFerrin-Warrack of Kukui Grove Center and Jay Higa (he flew in special so Denise Ching and crew didn’t have to come) of The Garden Island and Honolulu Star-Advertiser on a great career expo where two Deja Vu workers — Kyla Koerte and Akime Dizol — had to check out what was happening outside their store Saturday.

Catherine Lo (she was at a “reunion” now that Juan “John” Ochoco is not in the hospital — he also goes by “John,” Lo said) said she’ll be looking for graves of Hanapepe Massacre victims Saturday at the Filipino cemetery (it’s the one near Kauai Veterans Cemetery and in front of the Chinese cemetary that is overgrown in Hanapepe).

Cheryl Stiglmeier said the climate strike took place during work so she couldn’t go. Instead, she took her girl scouts on a bus ride on Ride the Bus Day where the scouts not only got to ride The Kauai Bus for free, they learned how to read the schedule and how to catch the bus.

Hi Joe! (Danita Martinez — pink dragonfruit makes natural lipstick — had to teach Elvrine Chow that it had something to do with coffee!) drew a lot of attention at the Kauai Community Market at Kauai Community College Saturday (Mary Williamson was going around telling people about it, too) when Dirk Soma and his entrepreneurial class brought the pop-up to life (how early to brew all that coffee?) with coffee grown and roasted within the state (Mary was thrilled the Waialua Estate was back ahead of the Chocolate Festival, and which one had the natural, minty taste?).
Happy Camper for Sunday, September 22, 2019
Congratulations to Gary (Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami promoted him to “governor of Kilauea!”) and Haunani Pacheco, Trinette Kaui and Sonia Topenio on being the most recent awardees of the Mea Ho‘omana‘o Awards that were started by the late Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste and presented during the Kauai Chamber of Commerce third-quarter general membership meeting at the Kauai Beach Resort near Hanamaulu (how was that farm-to-table dinner?).
Happy Camper for Friday, September 20, 2019
If you’ve never seen the vista from Kukuiolono Park pavilion in Kalaheo (don’t forget the free Jack Hodges and the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk coming up there Sunday, Oct. 6!), check out Aren Blake’s oil painting that’s part of the more than 70 pieces on display at 2019 Art Kauai in the Kauai Society of Artists gallery in Kukui Grove Center. Kudos to Melissa McFerrin-Warrack, who started her tenure with Kukui Grove by visiting an Art Kauai opening.

Lloyd Kajikawa can pay some attention to his lawn, now because kudos to Kelvin Moniz and ALL of the Kauai Independent Food Bank ‘ohana on a “what-I-heard (mahalo, Cyndi Ayonon —she was at Kauai Soccer Association games because son Colby coaches) on the accounting)” was a great Silver Birthday Bash!

Haley Zina had never played volleyball until she went to a volleyball camp, said her father Paul Zina. Haley is one of those young high school students who make a splash on the Kauai Interscholastic Federation sports arena. Paul Zina said Haley wanted to try out for the Menehune team, and he was surprised the little “firecracker” made the junior varsity squad as a libero.
