The students at Koloa School just “brought what they could” and the students of the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School got help from Vice Principal Deena Fontana and Jonel Elias (how can the water go off right at the start of the collection?) and the student council in sharing food (more than half a ton!) because they are “Grateful” … kudos to Holo Holo Charters (was a nice chance to catch up with Dan Sargent of McBryde Resources and Trinette Kaui of A&B Properties) on their first food drive.

The holidays are definitely here, as Edwin Vea (he was helping Karin Panui of Mailelani’s at the Kekaha School craft fair last week) hosts his own Beach House Restaurant craft fair Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with more than 60 vendors (that’s bigger than the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School Media TV event, where Karin was one of about 40 vendors!)

Nope, Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami didn’t make it to the obstacle course, where everyone was anxious to see how he would do against the never-ending supply of Wilcox Elementary School students who competed against celebrities, including Kauai Fire Department Deputy Chief Kilipaki Vaughan (he was even distracted by tossing fuzz balls in the Not In My Backyard game!) and the KFD crews, Kauai Police Department Chief Todd Raybuck and the KPD crew (Paul Applegate said he lost count of how many kids beat him in that course).

Kudos to Franci Davila, Trysen Kaneshige, Seth Womble and the many, many hands (did you get yours involved?) on a great ‘O Au Keia, A Healing Mental Health Art Show, that found life in the former Sports Authority space (Kukui Grove Center had the Vance Pascua mixed martial arts experience there last week). Carol Yotsuda was getting worried her Garden Island Arts Council board was going to leave her alone to disassemble the environment, and Trysen amassed a nice collection of artists for a nice “street” flavor, and Joanne Parongao had to get the Tsunami Taiko ensemble involved.

Junior Leones was participating in the annual Veterans Day service for the first time as he joined Nate Paleka (he’s related to Kapaa High School’s Calvin Paleka) and Makoa Ibaan on the caretaker team (great job getting the place readied for the service!).

Kenny Ishii was supposed to meet a film crew at the Kauai Community Market at Kauai Community College in Puhi Saturday, and Amy Chun was visiting with friends who are on Kauai for the robotics competition at Kukui Grove Center.

Congratulations to Kapaa High School junior Dana Murata (she’s No. 1!) and Zylan Pa-Conant on medalling at the Billy Tees Hawaii High School Athletic Association bowling tournament at Kauai Bowl at Rice Shopping Center in Lihue Thursday and Friday.

Congratulations to Stephanie Iona, Laurie Yoshida, state Senate President Ron Kouchi and the big ohana of people who coordinated the visit of Hawaii’s first lady Dawn Ige and a lot of state senators to Waimea High School for a closer look at the makings of the ‘Aina Pono for 2020 farm-to-table food program.

Kudos to Isobel Storch and the Friends of the Kapaa Public Library on the successful installation (Florence Toyofuku had a lot to write about in her journal) of the book exchange, street-side of the Kapaa Public Library (did you check out their fire ant detection kits?).

Angela Ventura (she’s back following some months working at an Alaskan restaurant!) was thrilled when The Great Pumpkin (he didn’t walk on water, too!) visited the Kauai Gynmastics bridge set up in the trunk of a Jeep during the Trunk or Treat event at Kukui Grove Center on Halloween Thursday.

There was no witches’ brew, where were the croissants, and did you see that Sugarloaf (pineapple) Jack O Lantern at The Kauai Culinary Market, a partnership with the Kauai County Farm Bureau and The Shops at Kukuiula?

Happy Camper for Wednesday, October 30, 2019

Kudos to all (!!!) the organizers of the full plate of pre-Halloween activities over the weekend … and, it’s not over, yet …tomorrow is Halloween, and there’s a bunch more things taking place.

Happy Camper for Monday, October 28, 2019

Kya Suimour is ready for Halloween with two jack-o-lanterns to create after helping her father distribute more than 200 pumpkins (Sarah Thompson said she stopped counting after reaching 200!) at the Kauai Community Market Saturday at Kauai Community College in Puhi. HIJoe is back after “assessing” the program, and construction class students Micah Moriwaki, Kal Anacleto and Hizo Delos Reyes were able to get pumpkins for their families along with lunch.

Spongebob was about the only one missing at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Halloween race, where even Popeye (could he have been Squidworth in disguise?) and Olive Oil showed up at the mole area parking lot to watch the Bumblebees take on the Baby Shark and other cast of characters…even Mike Curtis made it on time after doing a whole day of senior softball.

Beau and Jordan Hannafious of Rainbeau Jo’s had a lot of reason to be excited, Thursday — International Credit Union Day! Janice Bond (did she foot the bill for the Daylight Donuts?) said Rainbeau Jo’s is ranked No. 11 on Buzzfeed (they’re a social media site) and the only one from Hawaii to get a Yelp rating on that site.
