Happy Camper for Friday, May 15, 2020

Sharon Sahara (she’s really good at knowing who’s who even with all the PPE) ran away from the office to get in some shopping, Wednesday at the Puhi Park Produce, and Ed Nakaya (how is retirement?) and Sharlyn Nakamine were first-time explorers to Puhi…who had the flat beans?

Happy Camper for Monday, May 11, 2020

Kudos to Pastor Tom Iannucci, D’Lissa Iannucci (Pietro’s meatballs without the pasta is akin to Hamura’s noodles without the dashi — it’s a package), Christina Ensman, and all those Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child team from the Breath of Life Church at Rice Shopping Center in Lihu‘e for taking the time to bless the community with a special Mother’s Day drive-thru distribution.

Happy Camper for Friday, May 8, 2020

Happy birthday, Chef Jason Sunada (those Kawai Kokoro scones — love them blueberries — were a definite reminder, Wednesday!), and Sally Cravens (how long is that virtual marathon?) said it’s birthday time for Clay Carvalho as well.

Happy Camper for Wednesday, May 6, 2020

Kumu hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin promised a special treat for this Sunday’s SOUPer Sunday event that returns to the parking area at the Kalaheo Kaua‘i Kookie (Leina‘ala said Ann Hashisaka does a lot of work for this event) bakery and kitchens (check out their Sunday specials, too — we had spaghetti the last time in Kalaheo) starting at 4 p.m.

Happy Camper for Monday, May 4, 2020

Kudos to Bruce Baumgartner, Rocky and Dely Sasaki and all those Calvary Chapel hands on having a prayer space for the sold-out Friday Domino’s pizza pickup (er, drive-thru).

Happy Camper for Sunday, May 3, 2020

Yes, it’s vacation, but need to support your local business, Ron Wood (is it time for Puhi Park Produce after the Saturday on-air tour that ends when the market opens at 10 a.m.?).

Happy Camper for Friday, May 1, 2020

Tommy Noyes was lamenting the rules and regulations that keep Friends of Kamalani and other volunteers from clearing the opala at the Morgans Ponds at Lydgate Park.

Happy Camper for Wednesday, April 29, 2020

Souper Sunday took on a whole new meaning when Ann Hashisaka of Kaua‘i Kookie’s Kalaheo bakery, marketplace and kitchen (love that term — they had spaghetti on special Sunday, too), teamed with Ka Lei Mokihana o Leina‘ala to serve chicken soup (homemade, no less) for drive-through customers.

Happy Camper for Monday, April 27, 2020

Kudos to New Hope Lihu‘e Senior Pastor John Cabello (wife Rhonda Cabello was speechless in amazement at the huge turnout), Kaua‘i Police Department Chief Todd Raybuck (even Coco Zickos showed up), and all the many hands that turned out Saturday during the inaugural Police, Pastors & Pancakes drive-thru breakfast giveaway for young people 18 years and under that got help from Grove Farm (yep, the orange-and-black troops were out in force at the Puhi Park Produce, too) and the Puakea Golf Course (chef from the Puakea Grille was among the professional chefs flipping pancakes on the single griddle).

Happy Camper for Wednesday, April 22, 2020

Happy birthday, Kyan Kamala who was surprised by the small caravan led by the fire trucks from the Waimea fire station, Sunday — congratulations to Big Brother Eric Pomroy and crew for orchestrating that social distancing compliant surprise! Happy birthday, too, to Mike Curtis whose brother Paul was working the pages at TGI.

Happy Camper for Monday, April 20, 2020

Kudos to former Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. who was playing dad, Saturday during the food distribution coordinated by Leilani Mindoro and the collective efforts of the unions on Kaua‘i.

Happy Camper for Sunday, April 19, 2020

Kudos to Chip Bahouth, chef Michael Young and all those Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort volunteers (they’re the same guys who do the ‘Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament) on creating and distributing 650 meals for the families of the furloughed associates.

Happy Camper for Friday, April 17, 2020

Bill Spitz (he referred to Mayor Derek Kawakami’s archive footage to create his fabric face mask because his order didn’t make it for Wednesday afternoon) said this COVID-19 has thrown his lifestyle totally off, not being able to have breakfast at Kukui Grove Center.

Happy Campers for Wednesday, April 15, 2020

Mayor Derek Kawakami beat Bill Spitz (is he going to check out the Wednesday version of the Puhi Park Produce?) by making face masks the rule for everyone 5 years and older, effective 5 a.m., Tuesday.

Happy Camper for Monday, April 13, 2020

Happy birthday, Jane “CJ” Nakashita (yes, there are people who still remember you), who spent her special day in COVID-19 isolation with her two doggies in the San Francisco area, where they are staying home, too.

Happy Camper for Sunday, April 12, 2020

Easter has come and gone in the unprecedented times of COVID-19, as Melissa McFerrin-Warrack, garbed in her gayly-colored Easter wear, trooped through the nearly-empty walkways of Kukui Grove Center (they’re closed today for Easter) on Good Friday.
