Kudos to Patrick Ono and the Matson Kaua‘i team for its sixth annual food drive contribution to Child & Family Service. Patrick, who serves on the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Branch board, said he wanted to help at the CFS Festival of Hope for Kaua‘i Families, but said there were enough volunteers that particular day.

Kula the dog, belonging to artist Lucas Murilo, got excited with the spectators who stopped to watch the development of the mural being created by muralists Seth Womble (he said that Hanapepe pickup truck needs some serious Bondo work) and Sam Schryver.

Virtual means there are no people (other than performers), but the excitement is still there as Gerald Hirata’s social media page picked up lots of comments about the Virtual Bon Dance that spanned two days and several different events around the Kaua‘i Soto Zen Temple in Hanapepe.

Chef Carla Dusenberry (yep, she did wonders with that fundraising bento Saturday during the Kaua‘i Soto Zen Temple Zenshuji virtual bon dance) has reprinted her cookbook that has all kinds of broke-da-mouth stuff like “Smash ‘Ahi Poke, Pipipi,” where if you’re looking for how many tablespoons, teaspoons or ounces…you’re outa luck.

Happy birthday, Toyo Nishida, who celebrated his special day Thursday with his Regency at Puakea ‘ohana (can’t visit because of the COVID-19 pandemic).

Happy Camper for Friday, August 21, 2020

Happy birthday, RoseAnne Jones of the Kaua‘i Society of Artists (and American Association of University Women Kaua‘i chapter, too), who celebrated her special day on the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment Tuesday.

The Celebrating Women of Leadership & Courage exhibit is available for viewing from noon to 4 p.m., through Sunday at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery at the Kukui Grove Center. Beyond what is on the walls, RoseAnne Jones and her crew have done an amazing job of getting the information out to those who cannot view the exhibit.

Congratulations to Rick Lang and the Merriman’s Kaua‘i ‘ohana on the re-opening of its eating (and socially-responsible drinking) place located at the top of Stacie Chiba-Miguel’s “new” stairway that was worked on during the COVID-19 closures at The Shops at Kukui‘ula.

Happy Camper for Friday, August 14, 2020

Tommy Noyes of the Kaua‘i Path said the bicycle shortage should be easing up (do you see some of the newer fancy bikes out there) soon, and Angelo Catiggay (no, he wasn’t part of the Bunny Rabbits and Turtles group) was part of the August Bikes on Rice, where eBikes are starting to make their appearance.

Happy Camper for Wednesday, August 12

Congratulations to Eric Burton of The Kaua‘i Store and Emilia Knudsen of the Kaua‘i Community Pantry that reopened on Monday closing in July in order for Burton to transition “from vine to vine!”

Happy Camper for Monday, August 10, 2020

Edie Ignacio Neumiller (she’s a Zonta Club of Kaua‘i past president) said the Kaua‘i County Committee on the Status of Women will be part of the Friday program at the unique historical exhibit of women leaders from 4:30 p.m. at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery in Kukui Grove Center.

Mahalo, chef Judy Capertina of Haole Girl Island Sweets, for the fancy dessert using plumcots that was included as part of the “Breakfast Anytime” food distribution for Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort & Spa “colleagues” (that’s Martie Grabias term).

Happy Camper for Wednesday, August 5, 2020

What? Kyle LaBenz was not stuck in traffic; he got so excited he forgot his guitar and had to turn around to fetch it, Monday and still make it to the virtual business support piece put on by the Kaua‘i Government Employees Federal Credit Union

Happy Camper for Sunday, August 2, 2020

Another round of kudos to Kirk and Tora Smart and the Strings of Joy ‘ohana for last week’s distribution of Kala ‘ukulele for Kaua‘i’s graduating seniors.

It would’ve been nice to have been one of the 1,300 employees of the County of Kaua‘i Wednesday when Mayor Derek Kawakami and Managing Director Michael Dahilig (that giant chess set would be nice for checking out the new menu — it’s got something for almost everybody at TGI — at the Kaua‘i Beer Company) joined members of the county’s Employees’ Council in distributing school supplies to children of county employees.

Happy Camper for Wednesday, July 29, 2020

People were counting their blessings (how opportune, or inopportune, to have the gas prices increase on the day people jammed the gas stations ahead of the storm!), Monday after Hurricane Douglas passed north of Kaua‘i, late Sunday night into the wee hours of Monday morning when Jasmine Kaohelauli‘i’s “found puppy’s” owner came to claim the lost canine.

Happy Camper for Monday, July 27, 2020

Ferdinand Dosono of Kaua‘i Kim Chee (it’s been so long since we saw them, the last time was at Times Supermarket, where the plastic containers of kim chee and namasu are displayed) said there is no substitute for the “char and smoke,” as the Kaua‘i Kim Chee ‘ohana (What? They sold out of the burgers and it wasn’t close to lunch yet) made their first appearance at the Puhi Park Produce.
