Kudos to Ashton Varner and the County Housing Agency on coordinating the outreach services for the Shelter In Place residents at the Salt Pond Beach Park. The effort was overlapped by the Kaua‘i Fire Department conducting water lifesaving exercises, and county Department of Parks & Recreation worker Simplicia Tugade making sure the beach was clean before the visitors arrived.

What? Melissa McFerrin-Warrack (she was thrilled to see Sue Kanoho enjoying the U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific musical ensemble Small Kine!) was enjoying a bowl of pancit from the Pau Hana Market Monday at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e to wrap up a long weekend.

Mayette Loseto (is she going to have lei for the U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific Small Kine ensemble — they play this afternoon at the Pau Hana Market at Kukui Grove Center?) had visitors Saturday.

Plesiosaurus is an ocean dinosaur (Xyler Raquel —he goes to King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School — said only land animals are “dinosaurs”), said Tamatoa Lloyd, who was working on a distance-learning exercise Wednesday at the Kaua‘i Government Employees Federal Credit Union Kilauea branch at the Ahuimanu Shopping Center.

What? The deadline for grant applications is today? Diana Singh of the county Office of Economic Development (she said her kids like doing flier distributions, too) was out in the field helping farmers make sure grant applications were filled out correctly, and for those who had no access to computers, even brought out her laptop to make sure no one fell through the cracks at the Grove Farm Market Saturday in Puhi.

Congratulations to all the high-school graduates (hope Jannelle Puplava was not late for the Kaua‘i High School graduation, and Shalyn Vegas was even more radiant at the Waimea High School celebration than the practice at Aloha Dance Studio)!

Happy Camper for Wednesday, May 19, 2021

With graduation looming Friday, Kalen Konishi pushed his final work day on his combined Capstone (er, Senior)/Eagle Scout project that needed to have the final components like the target backing and painting done.

Happy Camper for Monday, May 17, 2021

Kudos to Kapa‘a Junior ROTC Sgt. Ian Versammy, Col. Smith, Jim Rosa (actually, credit belongs to son Michael, who felt recognition should be extended to everyone enlisting into the military) and the ‘ohana for celebrating the nine Kapa‘a High School graduates, including Sam Keopuhiwa, who is a member of the Class of 2020, Saturday in Kealia, that just happened to be National Armed Forces Day!

Stacie Chiba-Miguel is thrilled — the people are back! — taking a break between getting daughter Emalia to help with the photo shoot, and helping Ashley Yoshimori and Samira Siale with the Fishing for Charity (yes, you have to supply your own gear!), Wednesday during the Farmers Market at The Shops at Kukui‘ula where The Last Supersonic barely had time to catch a breath.

“Irene Gusman would be so happy,” said J Robertson, playing and umpiring for the ‘Ohana Motors Rebels, as he watched Paula Gusman make a play for the East Kaua‘i Legends (Wanda Ibia is the other mother in the EK Legends lineup) Saturday during the opener of the Kaua‘i Senior Softball league second-round games at the Peter Rayno Sr. Park (Ernie Domingo said they did park cleanup Friday!) in Hanama‘ulu.

County Councilmember Billy DeCosta (he said his missus’s favorite time of the year is NFL football!) was ecstatic about the lights at Vidinha Stadium turning on Friday night for the inaugural Kaua‘i youth football games (kudos to coaches Teddy Arroyo, Michael Tressler and Kyle Linoz — he gets full ‘ohana support, too! — for spearheading the effort to enable the island’s youth a way to enjoy one of America’s favorite pastimes!).

Happy Camper for Friday, May 7, 2021

Happy birthday, George Weber (did you check out the Tire Warehouse ad in the Wednesday TGI? They even had a nice CVS Longs piece, too)! So, on what days does Hoku get the spa treatment?

It’s a shame the Tahitian toere is not a farm product. You could use it to let people know about the Pau Hana Market, or as Celina Baliaris said, “Just follow the drums. Just follow the drums.” Tepairu Manea had his Anahola toere players at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e for May Day Saturday.
