Today is Monday, so Sarah Tochiki and the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School Band (still time to vote for the CKMS Pueo Ice at the American Savings Bank KeikiCo competition!) will be gracing the Pau Hana Market (Kaua‘i Churros make good post-turkey and partying grinds) at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e from 3 p.m.

Kudos to The Salvation Army, both the Lihu‘e and Hanapepe Corps, and the Kapa‘a Interfaith Association, on making Thanksgiving special for more than 2,000 Kaua‘i residents!

Mahalo to the Kaua‘i High School Key Club for shopping for all those turkeys and hams to the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank so families would have some holiday foods to celebrate the holidays!

Happy anniversary, Pau Hana Market! Sonya Emura and her sons Makana and Makoa (he discovered the macadamia nuts from Dr. Francis Takahashi of Miki Macs Honey) of Kaua‘i Churros are back, much to the delight of market shoppers (one said it’s a mess, but worth every bit, and Jean Souza — no, she’s still not working — said she loves how Sonya has her two sons working).

Wouldn’t it be nice? A Salvation Army Red Kettle at one, maybe two of the vendors at the Grove Farm Market (Sharyl Lam Yuen was showing the ropes to Marlene Duarte, who was experiencing her first market with Grove Farm!) would make a good pairing with the Toys For Tots (Bill Souza and Jacee Perreira are building up that stockpile) collection tent.

Kudos to Melody Lopez of the Kaua‘i Community Alliance for chairing this year’s Project Connect that provided people with housing insecurity a wealth of resources and services for getting on more-secure footing.

Watermelon radish is the name of that fancy white radish that’s pink on the inside, Amy Chun! Amy loves to make pickles with them — they’re available at Wirat Farms at the Pau Hana Market at the Kukui Grove Center — because they leak the pink color into the brine (doesn’t always need to be salty?).
Happy Camper for Monday, November 15, 2021
Karrie Pereira of the Wailua Meat Co. said the popular item at the Grove Farm Market is the bone marrow (they got two sizes!) and the hamburger.
Happy Camper for Sunday, November 14, 2021
Happy Veterans Day, and kudos to the many hands and hearts that got together to celebrate and thank the nation’s Armed Forces soldiers, overcoming the COVID-19 rules and restrictions in place to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus and its variants.

There were no whales to be seen, but a whole bunch of Rabbits and Turtles were at the Ahukini Landing park, spinning through the park to take a break and enjoy the high clouds and the setting sun (gotta hurry to make it back to the Mo‘ikeha Building parking lot by the time the sun sets…it’s going down before 6 p.m., now).

There were a lot of numbers swirling around the Kukui Grove Food Court before everyone settled on “21” — Happy Birthday, Diane Ebinger who spent her special day lunching with her family Friday, where Ronnie Matsumura and Ernie Domingo of the Kaua‘i Senior Softball league (Ernie said the new season starts in January, right after Christmas) had former Kaua‘i Chief Ale Lumosod (he had a special game ring for 15 years from a mainland tournament), and who was that gentlemen who rushed over when someone dropped his walking cane…low key aloha.

Unfortunately, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources confirmed there won’t be the annual Arbor Day sale at the Pua Loke nursery because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the construction of the new building taking place at the nursery site.

No, it’s not a haunted house, said Trineen Lopes and Shannon Pabo of the Kaua‘i Community College Cognitions program (they’re still waiting on the return of the Lights on Rice holiday parade!).
Happy Camper for Friday, October 29, 2021
Chef Glenn Hayakawa still doesn’t know how to make pie (the pumpkin pie croissants looked good, and does avocado and turkey come in a pie?) at Haole Girl Island Sweets (they’re at the Kukui‘ula Store, too!) during the Pop Up Farmers Market at The Shops at Kukui‘ula.
