Gerri Bolosan (yes, she and a group of other wahine artists, including former Mayor Maryanne Kusaka, still do their weekly painting sessions, no longer at Niumalu where the feeling has changed. They now do it at the Kaua‘i Museum) had the company of Patricia Viquelia Saturday during the craft fair (Grove Farm is going to do this every other month now!) that tagged on to the weekly Grove Farm Market.

Kudos to Sean Doi (official title is Spelling Bee official!) and his state Department of Education ‘ohana on hosting the Kaua‘i District Spelling Bee with the largest field in recent memory — 18 spellers!

Howard Yamaguchi has been driving school buses for 51 years. With so many companies having difficulties finding qualified drivers, Howard is a definite treasure, and this isn’t counting the fact he’s part of the Kilauea Social Club, too.

Happy Lunar New Year! Laurie Ho (the Monday Pau Hana Market was on the eve of the Lunar New Year, and aren’t we supposed to feast then?) said she remembers David Sosner talking about Mandarin oranges during the Lunar New Year in China.

“We’re having an art show!” Debbie Allen called out to a friend passing by the open doors of the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery Friday during the casual lunchtime crowd at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e. “Come check us out!”

Allen Huber of Project Vision is looking for volunteer medical professionals to take over for Dr. Mike Shay at The Salvation Army Hanapepe Corps. (Lt. Amy Lewis didn’t have enough gas to wait in those testing lines — it’s not that bad, anymore) when Dr. Shay takes over Grandpa Duty later on.

Kudos to Mia Pauletto and the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation committee for adjusting the KIF paddling schedule to accommodate the Island School varsity boys, who had soccer after paddling, and kudos to the Voyagers involved who went out and captured first place in the varsity boys long-distance race (good sportsmanship, too, for cheering on the Waimea and Kapa‘a crews before paddling back to the transition area).

Dixie Brichard and Rose Poppe cut their browsing short so they could enjoy some of the crab rolls by Kealoha Matsuda of E Ola Pono Hawai‘i Culture Home as a fundraiser for houseless people on Thursday during the weekly Aloha Market at the National Tropical Botanical Garden South Shore Visitor Center in Kukui‘ula.

Why didn’t Marcia Agena bring out that box of goodies from M and E Shells and Seeds (that stands for Ernie Domingo. Now we know how he gets all those fancy things) that she vends at the Menehune Product Fair (it’s in Waimea, of course) with Memory Robinson?

Happy Camper for Monday, January 17, 2022

Congratulations to the Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association Kaua‘i Chapter on getting the sold-out field of golfers out on the Hokuala Ocean Course (Kelly Hines was eyeing the Kipu Ranch Adventure package on the silent-auction table) to benefit the scholarship program (it’s so sad not to see the Kaus‘i Community College culinary-arts students doing their meal-preparation thing).

Happy Camper for Sunday, January 16, 2022

Congratulations to Tara McCoy, Christian Parado, Miranda Wehrly, Joel Santos and Kealoha Lum King, and the Keith Nonaka ‘ohana, including Annie and Keiryn, on getting the keys to their new homes on Friday from Milani Pimental and the entire Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity ‘ohana at the ‘Ele‘ele Iluna neighborhood.

Maren Arismendz of Sugar Skull (remember them from the farmers market days?) said Warehouse 3540 in Lawai just had their Second Saturday where there is music, pop ups, and all kinds of nice things taking place on the second Saturday of each month, starting at 5 p.m.

The recent rains did wonders for the farmers, said Laurie Ho of the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau, who was concerned about damage to the farms from the unstable weather conditions resulting from the passage of a low-pressure system last week.

Happy Camper for Monday, January 10, 2022

Kilauea artist Ayala Wise used her accumulation of findings from her walks to create the trio of houses (they even have windows!) that were on exhibit with the Kaua‘i Society of Artists Small Works/Big Show exhibit that ended its run Friday at the KSA gallery in Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e.

Happy Camper for Sunday, January 9, 2022

Happy New Year! The fine folks at Kaua‘i Bakery (that guava malasada was a winner!) are back from their “vacation,” and Barbara Oki of Oki Bento is seriously looking at doing her corn chowder again. Lots of bacon and corn, Barbara said.

Happy Camper for Wednesday, January 5, 2022

The weekend rains and inclement weather appear to have spared the farmers who brought out bunches of fresh produce and fruit Monday to the Pau Hana Market, a partnership between the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau and Kukui Grove Center at the Lihu‘e mall.
