Arleen Yoshimori was thrilled to be working at the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce luncheon with Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan (how did Janice Bond know she needed a maile lei for him?) because not only she was happy to be hired by the Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i Resort, her son’s boss is Southwest Airlines’ Brad Hawkins. Fellow server Gloria West said she became a grandma during the COVID-19…thank you, Paul Toner and the Royal Sonesta HR department for keeping these ladies happy to be working!

The only thing missing from Saturday’s state Department of Health Kaua‘i District Health Office pop-up at the Republic of the Marshall Islands RMI 43rd Constitution Day — kudos and mahalo, Cece Kilma for letting us in on the observance! — was Pua Kaohelauli‘i, who always finds these types of events where Blanca Gil (mahalo for all the help during Tropic Care Kaua‘i) said they’ll be helping with some “Play Streets” games at the Kekaha Family Fun Day Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center.

Kudos to the Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association for all that hard work over the past couple of days to get the Keiki and Junior Lifeguards program underway — Dr. Monty Downs said he used to be able to do 100 compressions in a minute when he was in the Emergency Room!

Navy nurse Anna Malia Jones has geneology that trace her roots to Kurtistown on the Big Island, and Kailua on O‘ahu, where she grew up. She now lives in Colorado, but the Hawai‘i roots influenced the design she had on the knapsack she created for the 2022 Tropic Care Kaua‘i Innovative Readiness Training Mission.

The Gannaway family from Texas had a reunion (Atticus Gannaway came from New York!) of sorts and celebrated the 51st wedding anniversary of Geoff (he said the last time he saw Kaua‘i was through a periscope of a submarine) and Carol Gunnaway from Hunt, Texas with Geoff (he’s not a junior), Emily (she was pretty far from the red shrimp place), Azeale, and Liora (who had that sugarloaf Phrosty?) at the Grove Farm Market in Puhi Saturday, where the “Gannaways Getaway” T-shirts they were wearing was a distraction from the conversation going on with chef Jakki Nelson (nope, no racing Thursday because Fast Company is racing on O‘ahu).

Happy Father’s Day, Kaua‘i!

Kudos, Lexi Jones (Dr. Addison Bulosan was waiting to play bass for Dondi) on another nice Downtown Lihu‘e Night Market, where Garden Island Trollers Capt. Jolene Spence (their boat fishing tournament is this weekend at the Lihi!) was busy with the flying saucers (more on tap this weekend at the Kaua‘i Soto Zen Temple Zenshuji’s Obon festival!) with Alvin Tanigawa at the Hamura tent. Laurel was busy with the andagi.
Happy Camper for Monday, June 13, 2022
Dana Romsdal got to shut down Goldsmiths Kaua‘i early enough Saturday so she and her sister Leigh (pronounced “lei”) could enjoy the 150th Anniversary of the King Kamehameha Day Celebration at the Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i Resort Lihu‘e, where Leigh could make lei with all those Kaua‘i Family and Community Education volunteers.
