Congratulations, Jonell Kaohelauli‘i and the county Department of Water for coordinating the 17th Make A Splash (it’s not annual anymore because of the two-year layoff due to the COVID-19 pandemic), where more than 750 of Kaua‘i’s fifth-grade students received water education through the interactive activity stations.

The celebrities were out in force Sunday at The Battle of the Food Trucks on Kress Street in Lihu‘e, when Comedian and Member of the City & County of Honolulu Council Augie T was taking selfies with that construction wall screening that was created by the Garden Island Arts Council for a Rice Street event, and Amanda Smith, TV’s “Living 808” guest chef, had her full-on video crew in tow.

Mahalo, state Senate President Ron Kouchi, Stephanie Iona, Laurie Yoshida, Dallas Correa (when did he become a UH Rainbow Warrior?), Coach Rich Hill (he at one time had a TGI subscription mailed to him in California), and all those University of Hawai‘i baseball players for hosting a sold-out baseball clinic, where Lt. Gov. Josh Green was able to squeeze in a stop (mahalo, LG, for the nice pin!) after his Westside tour (Coach Basilio “Bunga” Fuertes knew the LG was coming when he and Carmila Udarde did their vegetable seedlings distribution Saturday at the ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center.

At 2-1/2, Marcus Clayo is the boss of Cheesecakes by Marcus at the Grove Farm Market that opened under Saturday morning showers. Marcus was secure in his wagon, munching away at his favorite Choco Chunk Cookie (they have other Choco Chunk varieties, too) while watching mom slice up an Ube Japanese Cheesecake for sampling.

So, they don’t have Zumpa Ondo at O‘ahu bon dances? That’s their loss since Pam Arroyo of the Regency at Puakea made sure the lively ondo was on the schedule of dances when the Regency re-introduced bon dance following two, or three years of not having the popular event because of the COVID-19.

Everything is connected said Melissa McFerrin-Warrack (congratulations, Finnegan on attaining his black belt from Premier Martial Arts, Friday!) of the Kukui Grove Center when she presented the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i with a $1,250 award towards the annual Hawai‘i Foodbank annual (they had a three-year break because of the COVID-19) Food Drive Day…mahalo, Diane Keeler and the Walmart Foundation for the $5,000 contribution!

Happy birthday, Dorothy Higuchi who celebrated her 103rd birthday with about two dozen family and friends, Wednesday evening (they got almost all the “First Seating” at Kiibo restaurant (they were open, Kahu Jade Waialeale Battad…just so busy they forgot to turn on the sign, and the First Seating (how did Sean Doi manage to squeeze his family to a table?) was all gone.

Yes, we’re back at Walmart starting Thursday when the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative lifts a team of Kaua‘i’s Finest to the roof where they will be asking for help for the island’s Special Olympics program through Saturday … great way to get to meet some of the athletes and their coaches, too.

Kiele Rose Casillas (yes, newly-install Miss Kaua‘i Filipina!) was doing a last service project before heading off to college (Mayor Derek and Mrs. Monica Kawakami had Hailey being squared away for the fall semester, too), and the new Miss Hawai‘i Sr. (not “Jr.”) Elementary Hi‘ilei Berg started volunteering from Friday for both the 43rd Visitor Industry Charity Walk, and the ‘Ohana Fun Fair.

Kudos, Dan King, Diann Hartman (those Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort & Spa tunnels are pretty cool as shortcuts), Claudia Lowdy (I thought she was just charity walk chair!) and the many hands at the Hyatt, for juggling the launch of the Kaua‘i United Way 2022 campaign (yes, Timothy Takeshita, go find a champion!), and the resort’s brief respite from bookings to be able to host a day-long employee-appreciation event for the resort’s many hard-working associates.
