Trick, or treat! Halloween is in full swing. Laurie Ho, Amy Chun and all those Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau ‘ohana — they’re at the state convention on O‘ahu — missed out on the free pumpkin giveaway at the Pau Hana Market at Kukui Grove Center in Liuh‘e on Monday, where, surprise, got to talk story with Carol Texeira, Vianne Tabata and Sonia Topenio.

When the cowbell sounds at the Pau Hana Market (it’s not at the Kukui Grove Marketplace where Target is!) at Kukui Grove Center Monday, this is the last chance to get your hands on some of those 2,500 free Kaua‘i-grown (kudos, Josh Uyehara and the Hartung Brothers ‘ohana!) pumpkins (no, Mel Rapozo, these are jack-o-lantern pumpkins, not eating pumpkins!).

Kudos, Stacie Chiba Miguel, Pillare Mukai, and all those hands, on another great pumpkin giveaway, where even employees of The Shops at Kukui‘ula had a shot at those Kaua‘i-grown pumpkins (you gotta look for the Aloun Farm stickers!).

Happy birthday to Waimea High School middle Safina Sandblom, who spent her special day (baby brother was running around the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus in Puhi with a handful of mini birthday balloons, and grandma and grandpa had a birthday balloon bouquet) fighting the Island School Voyagers for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball championship.

Congressional candidate Jill Tokuda had flying saucers from the Kekaha Titans for lunch (dessert must be coming from the Chocolate and Coffee Festival!) Saturday when she popped in at the Harvest Festival where the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital crew was sizing, fitting and giving away free pumpkin-colored bicycle helmets and other items (Jackie Kanna said “Ma‘i” from Ma‘i Movement is the Hawaiian word for a woman’s period, and they met three young girls the Hawai‘i Health Systems Corporation Kaua‘i Region volunteers helped with information and the period packets they were distributing.

Kudos to Renae Hamilton Cambeilh of the YWCA of Kaua‘i, the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i, the Mokihana Club and Alice Luck of the Kaua‘i Planning & Action Alliance, Keiki to Career, Kamawailualani, and all those communication people for hosting the (Luke Evslin said “first”) in-person political forum for County Council candidates (yes, Nelson Mukai made it to the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball games in time Friday night, and Billy DeCosta’s Kapa‘a High School construction students are moving along with their code-approved tiny homes project). Very thought-provoking event!

Congratulations to the Kaua‘i Grown 8-and-under baseball team on going through unscathed at the Mililani High School (Mayor Derek Kawakami said he attended here at one time) 8U Pinto Baseball Tournament on O‘ahu! Kudos, too, to the Mililani Trojans for hosting the tournament for the aspiring baseball players and coaches instead of waiting for someone to invite them!

Keeli Iguchi (her brother wears No. 11 for the 12-and-under Pop Warner Kekaha Titans) made her debut on Saturday with glow-in-the-dark jewelry (good for Halloween events!) at the monthly Lihu‘e Downtown Night Market (thank heaven it was fall break so there was no Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation football game!), where Darnell Sugioka of Project Vision had Pat Coon administering free flu shots, and with the help of FilCom, offering free COVID-19 tests.

What happens when The Pie Lady (Sandy Poenhelt of The Right Slice) meets the Banana Bread Lady (Emily Szurgot of Pulse of Aloha, whose storefront is her great-grandpa’s VW van from Idaho) at the Grove Farm Market in Puhi (free pumpkins Oct. 22 from 9:30 a.m. until supplies last)?

What? Pluto is going to lead the Dog Fanciers of Kaua‘i costumed dog parade coming up Saturday at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e (it’s the same time as the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation football game where Kaua‘i High hosts Waimea High at Vidinha Stadium in Lihu‘e).

Friday was the last scheduled day for Nikki Cristobal, Holly Ka‘iakapu, Bree Blake (what? Waimea homecoming?), and Bethany Coma — they’re the Mo‘olelo Murals artists! — who got a visit from The Home Depot representative to make sure they had enough paint to finish the developing mural on the west wall of the YWCA of Kaua‘i building on Hardy Street in Lihu‘e.

Artist Alissa Hartman (if “Hartman” has two ns, it’s German; if it has one n, it’s British, Alissa said) likes reds (those earthy reds in the octopus and the native upland bird at Art Kaua‘i 2022 are pretty awesome) was doing gallery-sitting duty with artist Stephen Lucas Monday after the Kaua‘i Society of Artists opened its Art Kaua‘i 2022 on Saturday at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e. Yes, Laurie Ho, it’s worth checking out after Bev Pang comes home from Turkey.
