How come you got so much broccoli? Ernie Domingo wanted to know on Friday after the Ahukini Wharf Rats (if they sold those shirt’s I’d get one) lost to Ele Makule, 17-5 in the Kaua‘i Senior Softball League seventies division games contested at Isenberg Field on Fridays starting at 9 a.m.

What a great bunch of surprises at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort awaited people when attending the Charity Walk kickoff on Tuesday. A nice Valentine’s Day arrangement by Robert Ancheta (he also did the Hawaiian blessing for the Charity Walk) greeted guests to the kickoff.

Kudos, Darryl Low, Leilani Rivera Low and Halau Hula ‘O Leilani, on hosting and presenting the Ho‘ike Hula Concert, where lots of volunteers turned out to ensure guests of a special concert (The Makaha Sons made a guest appearance) that followed a day of inclement weather.

Susan Pittman of Clayworks at Kilohana in Puhi said there will be no Souper Sunday for the big game coming up on Feb. 12 because the restaurant at Kilohana doesn’t open on Sundays. She said, the next one, for sure.

The first thing that went were the tents, said Laurie Ho of the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau as shoppers garbed in rain gear sloshed through the Pau Hana Market at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e on Monday amid the wind, rain, and even lightning (how long between the lightning and thunder, Laurie?).

No, the Chinese lion will not be at the Pau Hana Market on Monday, and if you were not one of the early attendees to the Kukui Grove Center Chinese New Year festivities on Saturday, you missed out on the rambutan being passed out by the Pau Hana Market crew (Laurie Ho said they even had some — very limited quantity — Daphne McClure Moloa‘a Bay Coffee cara cara oranges), and Jamie Yasutake protea.

Kudos, Edwin Vea of The Beach House restaurant on coordinating the latest craft fair (if I hadn’t gone to Walmart, I wouldn’t have known) on Sunday on the lawn of the restaurant located right across Lawa‘i Beach Resort. Artist Leslie Frasier already has her Valentine art (just use different colored paper, she said).

More than two years waiting for a cup of Charmaine Moises’ ginger lemonade (no, Mary Pigao…no taste test, needed) is a long time. Kudos, Doug and Charmaine on getting the doors to Doug’s Dugout open after that long COVID-19 shutdown!

Fifty gluten-enriched portions? Are those the little one to three page “tiny stories” Tony LeHoven (didn’t he race yachts before?) has in his “Brain Food for the Starved Mind?” that’ll be available when LeHoven goes to the Talk Story Bookstore for a book signing in Hanapepe on Friday (it’s the start of the weekend eve for The Year of the Rabbit) during the Hanapepe Art Night (which means the signing starts at 5 p.m.)

It’s a new year (yes, Chinese New Year is Jan. 22 — mark your calendars!), and a bunch of new things happening at the Downtown Lihu‘e Night Market on Kress Street that was held for the first time in 2023, with Bronson Aiwohi welcoming guests with his Hawaiian stylings, and a new market manager.

Congratulations to Kaua‘i High boys varsity basketball coach Ipo Yoshioka (is that his chicken hekka recipe at the Red Raider food booth?), and Kapa‘a High School boys varsity basketball coach Kamahala Kauhane on directing not one, but two exciting games in a span of just three days.

Got a “softly-used” children’s, or young adult book lying around looking for new sets of eyes? The Kaua‘i RSVP (kudos on hosting the 2022 annual Recognition lunch at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort!) is collecting new, and “softly-used” books as its Martin Luther Day service project (are they going to be at the Kukui Grove Center, again?) to replenish the Little Libraries that have popped up around the islands.

Holidays decluttering? A lot of the material involved in decluttering make good contributions to The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, whose team arrives here on Jan. 20 (decluttering doesn’t happen overnight) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kaua‘i Resource Center off Ahukini Road. This will be the ARC’s first visit to Kaua‘i in 2023 after being involved with the numerous Salvation Army holiday missions on O‘ahu. Welcome back!

Not just once, but a bunch of times, and for quite a while, Sunday off the coast of the Ahukini Landing (nice treat for Padraic Gallagher’s Sunday bike ride) as a pod of whales took advantage of sunny, nearly windless weather to frolic, including several full-blown breaches, in the calm ocean.

New Year’s celebrations bring along a string of other milestone events like getting to know your Girl Scouts so you can order your year’s stash of Girl Scout Cookies (Thin Mints stored in freezers are super snacks!). Angela Hoover, the Kaua‘i Girl Scout coordinator, said booth sales start Feb. 17 and continue until the end of March, or until supplies run out … another reason to order ahead from your local Girl Scout.
