The flags are up, and Hui Alu is ready for the Kaua‘i Okinawan Festival (this is perfect because it coincides with Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month that is celebrated in May!) that starts Friday (gates open at 5 p.m.) and Saturday at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center in Lihu‘e.

Congratulations, Chelane Weaver, on being selected as the pa‘u princess representing Kaua‘i when the King Kamehameha Celebration takes place June 10 starting with the King’s Parade at 10 a.m. on Rice Street (watch for the traffic advisories!).

Bubble gum lei, fabric and palaka? Ribbon lei la‘i. Those fancy money lei and crowns that were not available from vendors on the way to graduation (good thing the rain decided to let up!).

Happy Camper for Saturday, May 20, 2023

A lot of people (there were a ton of stories about the traffic!) were praying for the sun to come out, Friday, so the public high schools graduation ceremonies could take place without the inconvenience of inclement weather …

Edwin Vea of The Beach House said this Sunday (need to take a break Saturday from all those Friday graduations!) is The Beach House Craft Fair from 9 a.m. (Jean Souza likes the early hour so she can shop before needing to be at work) to 1 p.m. on the lawn of The Beach House restaurant in Kukui‘ula.

If you’re lucky, you might get to run into one or more (there were just too many people on Friday when the exhibit opened), of the three artists — Shannon Hiramoto (did we miss Mu‘umu‘u Month?), Samuel Schryver (he said Common Ground in Kilauea has an event coming up, too), or Lora Finelli (great work on the Poem Piece!) — on a visit to the special three-artist exhibit taking place at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e.

Who would’ve thought the “third party internet outage” would’ve had the impact it had on non-fliers. The Moanalua High School boys golf team (and a lot of their supporters) got to spend Friday night stuck at Lihu‘e Airport because there were no hotel rooms to be had after their flight home was canceled, reported Hawai‘i News Now.

Coaches are important, too, said a golf coach from the Hawai‘i Baptist Academy on Thursday during the opening round of the David Ishii (he’s a Kaua‘i boy like Gen. Eric Shinseki) Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association boys golf tournament at Wailua Golf Course.

Congratulations, and mahalo, Kaua‘i Community College culinary arts students and staff, who have been very busy since Earth Day when they used the oven at the big imu to prepare pizza for the people participating in the Earth Day celebration.

Happy Camper for Wednesday, May 10, 2023

Wind is good, but not good enough for Bonjolea II with Bonnie Tiffany at the wheel to break the string of victories for Jim Saylor aboard Fast Company. Is Jim going to wear his fish hat when the Nawiliwili Yacht Club hosts its popular annual Father’s Day Fishing Contest? Got to let people know that it’s going to happen on Father’s Day.

Melissa McFerrin Warrack said this is a cultural music weekend as the Kukui Grove Center (kudos on a great field trip experience for the Kalaheo Elementary School second-graders!) celebrates Cinco de Mayo with Gypsy Spice during its Aloha Friday program.

Safina Sandblom, of the Waimea High School girls volleyball team, said losing the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation title to Island School on her birthday was the worst day ever.

Happy Camper for Wednesday, May 3, 2023

Mahalo, Noelani Pomroy, for getting lei to all those people (both the Royal Sonesta kaua‘i Resort Lihu‘e and the Kaua‘i Marriott!) so they could be appropriately garbed on May Day is Lei Day (Elvrine Chow had a bag with the phrase emblazoned on it).

Happy Camper for Monday, May 1, 2023

Kudos to the planning committee of the Kaua‘i Parent and Child Fair on a great event (one of the 30-plus vendors/exhibitors wanted to know if the event was bigger than Easter).

Happy Camper for Friday, April 28, 2023

What are Jean Souza and her Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery kupuna volunteers doing for the Parent and Child Fair that happens Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e?

Happy Camper for Wednesday, April 26, 2023

Yes, people have to eat rain or shine, Laurie Ho (How did that pigeon get into U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda’s town meeting, anyway?) of the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau on Monday at the Pau Hana Market at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e (the farm bureau is a collaborative partner with Kukui Grove Center and The Shops at Kukui‘ula for the farmers markets), when there were lines at all the vendors (have you seen the ones with the orange stickers for kupuna?) as the weather front passed over Kaua‘i.

Happy Camper for Monday, April 24, 2023

Happy birthday to Kahu Jade Wai‘ale‘ale Battad, who celebrated her birthday by having all of the Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run runners singing “Happy Birthday” to the birthday girl, who provided the opening aspiration on Saturday after Kaua‘i Police Department Acting Chief Mark Ozaki stepped forward to announce the occasion.
