Mahalo, Milani Pimental and the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity ‘ohana, for planning the key-passing so there wouldn’t be a problem with the Puhi traffic congestion. Who at the West Kaua‘i Hongwanji bon dance said it was smooth sailing?
Happy Camper for Saturday, June 24, 2023
Congratulations, Milani Pimental, Doug Haigh and the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity ‘ohana on being super busy with projects that put more people into homes!

It’s back! The American Cancer Society Relay For Life returns on Aug. 19 from 4 to 10 p.m. at the Vidinha Stadium soccer fields, and it’s not too early for the announcement, because The Kaua‘i Lions Club is hosting a rummage sale in the Kuhio Medical Center parking lot from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday to benefit the Relay For Life.

Jimbo Haynes of Nacogdoches, Texas (Susana Camille Cox, whowas still in the Zen retreat zone, said it’s the oldest town in eastern Texas) wolfed down his third flying saucer at the Kaua‘i Soto Zen Temple Zenshuji obon festival in Hanapepe (did you wait for the fire ceremony?) on Saturday night.

What is more fun, Jayd Javier, fluffling the trash bags in the whispering Puhi wind, or the air horn that mom uses to signal the start of The Grove Farm Market?

Dominica DeTrolio (did spell check change the spelling?) has been busy since graduating from Island School. According to Nannie Ann Apalla (mom Nancy was checking in with Lenny Rapozo on the upcoming Miss Kaua‘i Filipina scholarship pageant at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall), Dominica is a summer intern with Rebecca Like.

Happy retirement, Dr. Geri Young, who has served the people of Kaua‘i for some 40 years, including through the COVID-19 pandemic when she and other doctors were deemed “essential” workers like the police, fire, ambulance and dock workers!

In collaboration with the Kaua‘i Humane Society, the Kaua‘i Beer Company (they were really good at the Rotary Club of Kapa‘a’s 31st Taste of Hawai‘i on Sunday, June 4, at Smith’s Tropical Paradise in Wailua!) is hosting an adoption event on Saturday, June 10, at the height of the King’s Parade.
Happy Camper for Monday, June 5, 2023
What? We’re doing this again on Saturday? Rice Street is going to be shut down for the King’s Parade and Celebration (Nalani Brun said Kaua‘i is the only island with a complete set of pa‘u princesses, the units visitors come to see).

And, the winner is … how about one of the charter chefs of the Kaua‘i Poke Festival … Chef Rafael Camarillo (Kenny Ishii moved to Florida, which is why Aunty Ono is now a mexican food place) … tickets are still available for this afternoon … Bruce Sakimae said Taylor Sakimae of the Kaua‘i Poke Company is going to try.

Kudos, Jonathan Chun, Gary Ueunten (got to visit with Glenna Ueunten too since she only does the Thursday Sunshine Market now), Alan Hiranaka, and all those Hui Alu hands. Scott Taba was doing the Okinawa soba, and Harvey Maeda was busy with the Okinawa pork (wow! sold out on two nights!), and even U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda came to help with the andagi — it’s an art to have them soft and edible throughout.
