Kaleo Carvalho said the “Wai” and “Limu” shirts designate support for the kaikamahine, or wahine, and keikikane, or kane performers because the kaikamahine danced about water and the keikikane danced about seaweed.

Hard Ice and a Kaua‘i version of GuriGuri from Da Booze Shop were just some of the offerings at the last bon dance on the Kaua‘i Buddhist Council 2023 calendar at the Waimea Higashi Hongwanji.

OK, it’s time for the Koloa Plantation Days historic parade (Happy 100th Anniversary, Koloa Union Church, which serves as the parade grand marshall!), and figuring out how to get there with all the traffic closures (how long did it take to get to Koloa last Friday?).

Happy Camper for Wednesday, July 26, 2023

The historic Koloa Plantation Days parade (Koloa Union Church, celebrating its 100th anniversary on Sunday, is the parade’s grand marshall) that starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday wraps up a full week of activities (many not related to Koloa Plantation Days) that started last Friday with the heavy traffic going out of Lihu‘e.

Congratulations to Cherie Cabading, Yanny Jiang and all those hands on opening the doors to Kaua‘i Diner on Saturday. Edie Ignacio Neumiller was there with “the Neumiller in her name,” along with Naty Bali, who is a regular at the Lihu‘e United Church of Christ Labor Day Breakfast (are we having one this year?).

Alice Luck, of the Kaua‘i Planning and Action Alliance, was as good as her name when she found the blue envelope containing one of the prize giveaways on Thursday during the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce Mayor’s Luncheon that was sold out with more than 330 people at Koloa Landing Resort (did you park at the upper, or lower parking lot?).

Happy Camper for Friday, July 21, 2023

Kudos, Johnny Gordines and Dottie Yadao (home of the Moloa‘a Pride pineapple that’s only sold at the North Shore farmers markets) on getting the Hawai‘i Floriculture and Nursery Association convention back on Kaua‘i, where convention delegates (and local residents) could have the advantage of touring some of the farms of the newer flower (roses?) growers, as well as take advantage of visiting floral designers to learn of the most current trends.

Talia Anama of Ruke (permanent jewelry) has been so busy she was not aware of now-Tropical Storm Calvin floating around in the Pacific (the alert day is Wednesday!), and the Beach House Craft Fair coordinator Edwin Vea was already tied up with the early effects of Calvin after rushing to help Bernadette Byrd of Tanline Trading Company (they’re from Kilauea!) hold down her tent in the breezes that upended artist Leslie Frasier’s new pieces.

Ron Wiley of KONG Radio Group said when the state Department of Transportation closes the right lane (of a two-lane road like the Kaumuali‘i Highway), that’s closing half the road. Grass and tree trimming have been responsible for a lot of motorists’ adjustments to accommodate this maintenance work, like all those motorists from Kapa‘a who planned to attend the Waimea Shingon Mission bon dance who had to leave by 3 p.m. to arrive by 5 p.m. (the bon service start at six). That was not enough time to stop at Friday Art Night in Hanapepe. Brian Atendido was smart…he got to Waimea by 3 p.m. (so what to do until the bon dance starts at 6 p.m.?).

Happy Camper for Saturday, July 15, 2023

Don’t forget, Saturday is the Back to School Bash when nearly 3,000 backpacks of school supplies — there’s more than 1,500 for elementary (kindergarten through Grade 5), and more than 1,200 backpacks for middle and high school (Grades 6 through 12) — will be given away …

What? We missed the 7-Eleven Slurpee special? Not to worry; McDonald’s is supposed to have their “limited time” cookies and creme pies (wonder how it compares with the all-time favorite apple pie) starting today.

Char Ono, a Taiko Kaua‘i member that provided the intermission entertainment at the Lihu‘e Hongwanji bon dance on Saturday, said the three Japanese sailors — Shin Kawamoto, Shuji Nishimura and Tatsuo Tsuchiyama — finally reached home on Friday after spending more than a year sailing around the world.

Happy Camper for Saturday, July 8, 2023

There’s still enough time to “Touch-a-Truck” today (9 a.m. to noon) when the Kaua‘i Police Department (mahalo, Assistant Chief Mark Ozaki, and Sgt. Bobby Thompson!) coordinates “trucks” and specialized vehicles from KPD, Kaua‘i Fire Department, Lihu‘e Airport Rescue and Fire, the Transportation Agency, Department of Public Works, American Medical Response and others to the Vidinha Stadium south parking lot (that’s the one closest to Kaua‘i Collision Center).

Lihu‘e Hongwanji Mission celebrates its first bon dance since the pandemic starting tonight, and continuing Saturday, when dinner service starts from 5 p.m., the games and country store open at 6 p.m., and bon dancing starts from 7:30 p.m.

Dr. B, retired from Growing Our Own Teachers, and setting up charter schools, now does handmade note cards, and for the First Saturday presented by the Kapa‘a Business Association, even had July Fourth artifacts available for people to celebrate America’s birthday.
