LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i’s last surviving Filipino World War II veteran, Sixto Tabay, 95, has been in the intensive-care unit at Wilcox Medical Center in Lihu‘e since Monday, and his ‘ohana wishes to honor him on Veterans Day by sharing his story with The Garden Island.

Homeless outreach scheduled next week

Some hiccups reported with restaurant card program

KAPA‘A — Since mid-October, unemployed residents on Kaua‘i have been “supporting local” by using their $500 restaurant debit cards issued by the state as part of the Economic Relief Program at local eateries. But restaurant owners say there are a few hiccups with the program that surfaced when the cards were first issued.

Voting deadline nears, U.S. Postal Service confident

LIHU‘E — Jaye Yamaguchi-Chun, U.S. Postal Service carrier of the Lihu‘e post office, handed off about four to six trays of general election mail-in ballots across the street at the Office of the County Clerk Elections Division office on Monday morning, while Julin Rivera, Lihu‘e postmaster, advises residents to mail in their ballots by Friday, Oct. 30.

Serena Cox is Teacher of the Year

On Friday, Lori Kwee, a fourth-grade teacher at Ala Wai Elementary School in O‘ahu, was named the 2021 Hawai‘i State Teacher of the Year, and will be representing all of the states’s complex area teachers in the National Teacher of the Year Program next year in Washington.
