A healing, satisfying, ugly duo – noni and ulu

Ooh — what is that strange-looking thing? (It looks alien.) Is it a vegetable or a fruit? What do you do with it? These are some questions we residents of Kauai get used to answering about the noni (Indian mulberry) and ulu (breadfruit) growing along roadways and in fields and gardens on our island.

If Karen Donaldson can stay away from the emergency room come Sunday’s Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon, she’ll be delighted. A little less pre-race madness and driving to the hospital, and a little more relaxation and rest would be nice, too. “I’m not leaving anything to chance this year,” she wrote.

Presidents, lawmakers honor McCain’s life of service

Presidents and lawmakers from both parties honored Sen. John McCain’s decades of service to his country in the hours after his death Saturday. President Donald Trump, who once criticized McCain for being taken prisoner during the Vietnam War, said his “deepest sympathies and respect” went out to McCain’s family.

Water service shutdown today in Haena

The Department of Water announces a water service shutdown for customers located along a portion of Kuhio Highway in Haena; from Manoa Stream to Ke’e Beach, including all connecting roads this morning. Water service is being turned off in the selected area to prevent possible damage to the system in preparartion for the expected severe weather conditions.

South Africa blasts Trump over racially divisive tweet

South Africa’s government lashed out at President Donald Trump on Thursday after he tweeted that his administration would be looking into alleged seizures of white-owned farms and the “large scale killing of farmers” in the country, an assertion it said was false and “only seeks to divide our nation and remind us of our colonial past.”

Final report issued on Lehua restoration project

The National Wildlife Research Center of the US Department of Agriculture has provided the Department of Land and Natural Resources with a final report of its monitoring efforts relating to the presence of diphacinone, an anticoagulant rodenticide, used as part of an effort to restore native species habitat on Lehua Island.
