Warm reception

Hawaii’s team at the International Snow Sculpture Contest, part of the Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan, didn’t take first place. Or second, third, fourth or fifth.

The aftermath

Jill Lowry just came on board as executive director of Anaina Hou Community Park — in time for the weekend storm that hit the North Shore hard.

‘The Descendants’ is a great read, too

Many of us have seen the movie, “The Descendants.” Some of the scenes were shot here on Kauai, including at the Lihue Airport, Hanalei Bay and Tahiti Nui. I have mentioned a few times sitting in the George Clooney seat at the Nui. A scene where the characters drive to a spectacular spot that overlooks property that in the movie is the site for a planned development was shot at Kipu Ranch.

Live for each moment

Here is a short description of “The Shadow Box,” the latest Kauai Community Players production that opens Feb. 15: “In this compelling dramatic triptych, three terminal cancer patients dwell in separate cottages on a hospital’s grounds. The three are attended and visited by family and close friends: Agnes and her mother Felicity, estranged further by the latter’s dementia; Brian and Beverly, whose marital complications are exacerbated by Brian’s new lover, Mark; and Joe and Maggie, unready for the strain of Joe’s impending death and its effect on their teenage son.”

Home sweet home

A five-bedroom villa in Poipu has been chosen as Wall Street Journal’s 2018 House of the Year.

‘Happy with this president’

When President Donald Trump wrapped up his State of the Union address Tuesday, Sandi Sterker rose from her seat, raised her arms, pumped her fists and then applauded. She had a big smile and seemed near tears.

Man arrested in fatal crash

Kauai police arrested Jesus Cardel of Kilauea on Monday for suspicion of negligent homicide in the first degree.

Cool customers

“As we ride a nice wave into a peaceful sunny day, we don’t see what danger may be just on the side or below us that the day may bring. So just do the right things in life and it will all be OK …” And with that, you have the theme for team Hawaii in the 46th International Snow Sculpture Contest, part of the 70th Sapporo Snow Festival.
