Sustainable projects funded
The county Office of Economic Development announced last week that it will be providing funding of $432,701 to 29 projects or activities that support sustainable economic development for Kauai County.

Coco Palms defendants ask for stay in civil case

For 38 minutes on Saturday, millions of Hawaii residents and visitors feared for their lives as a message flashed across their cell phone screens stating there was an incoming ballistic missile and they needed to find shelter. For others, though, life went on because they didn’t receive the warning.
38 minutes of peace set this Saturday
In response to Saturday’s frightening experience for people in Hawaii of a false missile alert, one Hawaii resident is calling for 38 minutes of peace at 8 a.m. this Saturday. The goal is to seek immediate shelter in love and compassion. “We’re inviting people to stop and focus on creating peace within themselves, in their homes and for the world,” said Najda Maria.
Employee hurt trying to stop car theft
A man reportedly stole a vehicle from King Auto Center and an employee was injured trying to stop him Tuesday afternoon. According to verbal reports, the employee jumped on the hood of the vehicle but fell off as the suspect sped out of the parking lot.
Man drowns off Hanakapiai
A man reportedly drowned Tuesday afternoon on the North Shore. The roving lifeguards of the Kauai Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau, firefighters and the KFD helicopter were dispatched to an area offshore of Hanakapiai Beach, where a man was reported to be about a quarter of a mile from the beach in rough surf, according to a county spokesperson.
Thrift stores donations holding steady in new year
Local thrift stores said donations are strong and steady with the new year. Over at the Helen Mitsui Shared Blessings Thrift Shop in Kilauea, Susan Wright, who volunteers at the store, said that their donations usually increase at the end of every month.
County eyes new rules for bus stops
Kauai County is looking to adopt new rules for county bus stops. The proposed rules state that county bus stops will be closed for use between the hours of midnight and 4 a.m.; that alcohol, drugs and cigarettes, including e-cigs, will be prohibited at county bus stops; that no structures will be erected within the bus stop or adjacent to the bus stop; and no person will occupy a bus stop in a way that inhibits full use by the public.
Hit-and-run victim still critical
Through tears, Raymondo Sabay said it was difficult to look at his daughter as she lay in a hospital bed at Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition Friday.
