LIHU‘E — Once the offices of the Prosecuting Attorney, a portable building will breathe life as the clubhouse for the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i, Lihu‘e Outreach.
Located adjacent to the Lihu‘e County Park and the west end of the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall, the building got a big facelift Saturday when community volunteers gave it a new coat of paint.
“We’re hoping to get the building completed by May 20,” said Tina Albao of the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i.
Jim Clark and Lorraine Orr, the CEO and CPO of the Boys & Girls Club of America, are expected to be at the grand opening of the facility on May 21.
Following the ceremony, there may be an open house from 2:30 to 5 p.m.
During the Saturday painting party, the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa lent the expertise and talent of its engineering department, getting help from B&G Hawai‘i, Lihu‘e Outreach clinets, volunteers from Ace Hardware, and other parents and volunteers.
Currently, the B&G Club, Lihu‘e Outreach services more than 100 youth a day in after-school programming at Elsie Wilcox Elementary School because there is no facility for the B&G Club.
“Our B&G Club, Lihu‘e Outreach clubhouse will provide a safe haven and a place for the Lihu‘e members to call home for expanded programming in education, character development, health and physical activity,” Albao said.
“The Lihu‘e Clubhouse represents many individuals who have worked together to make the clubhouse a reality.”
Leading up to the painting party, Ben Esteban and his crew from Kaua‘i Builders have been working on renovations, inside and out the portable building.
B&G Club members also helped with the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i shoreline cleanup which, through the Weinberg Friends program, provided the club with a $10,000 grant.
