LIHU‘E – Kaua‘i Police Department had much to celebrate with its biggest National Police Week.
KPD’s first-ever Police Week Memorial Service was held May 13, with a service and roll call of all fallen officers in the state of Hawai‘i.
“That was very moving,” said Sgt. Roderick Green, KPD Community Relations officer. “We will plan to continue the service every year.”
After mayoral and county council proclamations on May 14 and 15, the department held a luncheon to honor its employees on Thursday.
The week concluded with tours of KPD headquarters on Friday and the results of the keiki public safety art contest on Saturday at Kukui Grove Center.
Chief of Police Darryl Perry is an artist and donated a painting to the winner.
“We wanted to do something different this year,” Green said. “We just really want to bring more recognition to Police Week.”
The KPD open house on Friday had a theme on youth and drug prevention, along with a SWAT team display.
