Pony 13s
LIHUE — Boogie Yam, Aaron Renaud and Kaliko Banquel combined for a two-hit shutout, 7-0, over Maui Friday at the Protect Our Nation’s Youth tournament in Hilo.
Joining the performance on the mound, Renaud smacked a homerun in his 2 for 3 performance in the batter’s box. Cody Taniguchi tagged a double in his 2 for 3 performance. Kaiolohia Perreira-Alquiza and Charles Lopez III also marked multiple hits to lead the Kauai PONY 13s.
Kauai then moved on to play Hilo Saturday and was able to move past the host team to the tune of a 15-6 win to move Kauai into the championship game where they will again face Hilo for the title.
Kauai now sits in the driver’s seat as it is a double-elimination tournament. Hilo will have to beat Kauai twice to claim the championship. The title game will be today at 10 a.m. with the second game if necessary will be at 1 p.m.
Bronco
The Lihue Bronco all-stars was able to shut the door on seven hits to down Windward, 7-2, on the Big Island Friday.
After earning the eligibility into the PONY Bronco division state tournament, the Lihue Broncos’ Kobe Viloria gave up one run on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks allowed through seven innings.
Christian Manera opened the scorebooks with an RBI double, pushing CJ Garcia, singling as the No. 2 batter, across the plate.
Micah Efhan, also singling to open, scored the second run of the first inning on a passed ball.
Tyra Abreu, walking first, also scored on a passed ball for the 3-0 lead before Windward was able to answer.
Matt Watkins powered into an RBI double and a groundout by Kolii Leong fueled two runs as Windward pulled to within a digit, 3-2, in the third inning.
Manera, getting aboard with no outs in the bottom of the third, scoring on a passed ball as the next three Lihue batters went down in order.
Lihue added two more runs in the fourth inning, Pookela Camarillo walking and scoring on a passed ball followed by Abreu, also walking first, and scoring.
Abreu got her chance in the box, singling in the sixth inning and after stealing secondbase, scoring on Efhan’s RBI double to leftfield.
Efhan finished tops in the Lihue hitting, getting a double and a single with two RBIs. Garcia singled and scored once, Viloria singled along with Abreu who scored three times.
The win advanced Lihue to the next round to play Hilo Saturday.
Unfortunately for Lihue, Saturday would prove to be a much different story as Hilo would go on to beat Lihue 11-1 in a game that ended via 10-run rule.
Lihue will now need to win the rest of its games to capture the state title. Its quest will begin today at 11:30 against Kona.
Mustang
The West Kauai Mustang all-stars opened its state tournament with a narrow 4-3 extra-inning win over Kona Friday in Hilo.
West Kauai was led by a pair of singles from Sean Mullikin, Kanaan Ephan and Tevin Shigematsu. On the mound, Tysson Unciano, Deiton Otomon and Degan Davis combined for the win in extra innings.
The win pinned West Kauai up against Winward Oahu on Saturday. Kauai was able to easily dispatch of Winward with 10-0 win, which puts West Kauai into the semi-final matchup today at 1 p.m. Kauai will play the winner of the Saturday game between Hilo and Mililani, results of which were not available by press time.
