Good vitamins are a good choice. We cannot get all the nutrients we need any more just from food. It is too processed and grown in ground that has been used too much. Selenium, one of the nutrients (a mineral) that is necessary, is a powerful anti-oxidant and is virtual missing in the soil nowadays.
Obviously, the food you do eat should be healthy. Avoid junk food and try as much as possible to go organic, local and fresh. Organic veggies, fruit, free-range chicken, wild fish and organic beef. Your teeth will look better, too, if you eat apples, celery and lots of high-fiber greens. Support local farmers
Drink lots of water. Take your weight in pounds divide it in half and that is how many ounces of water you need daily.
Drink tea. Can you overdo it? Technically you can overdo anything, but it would be very difficult to drink too much tea. So many health benefits
Even coffee has been redeemed as a good drink, as long as you can tolerate the caffeine. Research has shown that moderate amounts, (2 to 4 cups a day) can reduce the risk of colon cancer by as much as 25 percent.
Another drink that is good for you — as long as you keep the amounts moderate — is red wine. The anti-oxidants in red wine are great cancer fighters, but remember that a glass is 6 ounces, and that is plenty.
If you eat grain-based foods, make sure they are whole grain and organic. By choosing whole grains, instead of polished rice or white wheat products, you reduce the risk of colon cancer significantly.
Garlic is a known anti-microbial agent. It kills bacteria and has significant amounts of Vitamin C.
Fish is best. Lucky that we live on an island. Wild fish is healthy food. The Omega-3 fatty acids help guard against heart disease. Support the local fishermen.
Because we live in paradise, we need to protect our skin — too much of a good thing is not great for your skin. At least SPF 30 sunscreen lotion is required to keep your skin smooth and hydrated.
Smoking is not just bad for your lungs, mouth and throat, it robs your skin of Vitamin C, which is necessary to make connective tissue to hold up your skin. Stop smoking for all the right reasons.
Lose weight if you are overweight. Being heavy has no good side to it. Don’t try crash diets or do it without exercise, it won’t work. Lose weight over time by eating properly and exercising strategically.
Get enough sleep! Sleep keeps your immune system intact and helps elevate your mood. Usually 7 to 8 hours of good, quality sleep is required by most adults.
Reduce stress. Hang out with happy people who love you. Work in a job that is meaningful and that you enjoy. Develop strong positive relationships with people and marry well.
Having a good, healthy life is not that hard usually, it just takes a little thought and a little organization to do the right things. Wishing you a long, healthy, happy one.
