NAWILIWILI — Fast Company stayed out of trouble to take the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Junior Series, Race No. 2 on Thursday.
Bonjolea II came from behind the pack during the clean start and grabbed a solid lead by the end of the first of two legs at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club.
But sailing in 12 to 25-knot winds out of the northeast, combined with the choppy swells, took its toll as Bonjolea II tore her head sail in the second leg of the 4.5-mile course.
That did not prevent her from finishing the race as she came in at fourth place on a 53:57 elapsed sail and corrected to 57:29 PHRF.
Papaau, working strong in the middle of the field, also suffered a snapped main halyard in the second leg. Adding to her woes, her junior was too old resulting in the Express 27 taking a “did not finish” for her efforts.
Fast Company, steady in the runner-up berth, soared to the top of the pack on her 51:18 elapsed sail and correcting to 51:23 PHRF.
She was followed by OZone crossing at 53:53 elapsed sail and correcting to 53:58 PHRF for the No. 2 spot.
Weatherly crossed nearly two minutes later at 55:11 elapsed sail and corrected to 55:16 PHRF for the No. 3 berth followed by Bonjolea II.
Speedy rounded out the field on a 1:00:19 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:00:25 PHRF. She also corrected to 54:36 Club for top honors in that class.
The Junior Series continues Thursday with the first flags flying at 5 p.m.
The public is invited to view the races with the NYC Race Committee from the jetty wall area.
Following the Thursday race, the NYC will host its annual Father’s Day Fishing Derby Sunday for anglers 3 to 13 years old, accompanied by an adult.
