LIHUE — Wayne Katayama scored a free Sugarloaf pineapple and a basket of goodies Saturday from the Kauai Beekeepers Association.
Katayama was one of the shoppers at the Kauai Community Market who stopped by to support the Family and Community Education, Kauai Branch chapter, through donations, which will give him the opportunity win a special pineapple quilt at the upcoming Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair on Aug. 22 through 25.
The benefit of donating early to the FCE group was that tickets acquired Saturday were eligible for a free Sugarloaf pineapple from Anahola along with a basket of goodies from the Kauai Beekeepers Association. His ticket goes back into the running for the special pineapple quilt.
Lenore Klass of the Kauai FCE said pineapple is the fruit for the special ingredient contest, which will be featured at the farm fair.
There is a category for youth and adults, and culinary enthusiasts can create from breads, muffins, cookies, cake, or confection using the flavor of pineapple.
“It is very important to obtain a ‘General Information and Rules’ packet as classes and groups may have changed from previous fair events,” Klass said.
The Holomua FCE club of Lihue had volunteers on hand Saturday during the market with a copy of the General Information and Rules.
For those who missed the market, the packet is also available at the state building in Lihue, at the University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service office located in Room 210.
The packets are also available at neighborhood centers and public libraries on the island.
The rules also apply to other events hosted by the Kauai FCE, including two arts and crafts contest for youth and adult categories, a new origami, or Japanese paper folding, and recycled arts and crafts.
The packet also has pertinent information for the many quilt, needlework, and sewing projects available for youth and adult divisions.
A contest for youth only is the Lego contest, which has a theme of creating Lego “R in a Circle” Art.
Projects will be judged by age groups: ages 7 and below, ages 8 through 12, and ages 13 through 17.
For the Lego art contest, entrants will pre-register on Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at the home economics show tent and will be limited to the first 20 registrants.
A friend, or parent is allowed to register for students.
As the farm fair draws closer, advance entry display tags may be picked up at the state building.
