LIHUE — The driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal crash Saturday in Kapaa was arrested in connection with the death of the 52-year-old victim.
Charlotte Kaui, 82, of Kapaa, was arrested for second-degree negligent homicide and later released pending a police investigation.
According to a police report, Thomas Newsome was riding a motorcycle north on Kuhio Highway and Kaui was turning left in a sedan onto Lanikai Street from the southbound lane of the highway when they collided about 5 p.m.
Newsome, of Kapaa, was transported to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Kaui was also hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. She has since been released.
This was the third death on Kauai roads this year.
Alva Eugene “Gene” Jackson, 77, of Portland, Ore., died as a result of injuries he sustained from a two-car collision in Kapaa on Feb. 6.
The driver, a 71-year-old female visitor, was attempting to pull out of an overlook across from the Kaiakea fire station when their vehicle was struck on its side by a truck heading north.
Jill Garnett, a 26-year-old Waimea woman, was walking along Kaumualii Highway in Kipu on March 16, when she was struck and killed by 82-year-old Robert Yount of Kalaheo.
He was booked on second-degree negligent homicide but no charges have been filed.
