LIHUE — The National Oceanic Atmospheric Association reported Friday afternoon that Tropical Storm Flossie has gained strength and a weather advisory remains in effect.
The storm is about 1,395 miles or 2,245 kilometers east of Hilo. It has maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and moving 285 degrees west, northwest at 20 mph.
“County officials are in regular communication with NOAA personnel on Tropical Storm Flossie and continue to monitor the storm as it approaches the state,” said county spokeswoman Sarah Blane. “Essential personnel have been briefed with updated information and stand ready to respond in the event of a severe weather event.”
There are no coastal watches or warnings currently in effect. However, NOAA is advising residents on the Hawaiian Islands to continue monitoring Flossie through the weekend.
NOAA updates are made four times per day to offer accurate storm changes in direction or severity. The current 48-hour lookout is for continued west-northwest movement with a gradual westerly turn and no hazards affecting land.
The next NOAA advisory is scheduled for 8 p.m. HST.
Flossie is expected bring rain and strong gusts of tropical force winds of up to 70 mph. It should begin to weaken by late Saturday.
The Kauai Civil Defense Agency recommends that every household maintain a home survival kit that is ready for use in emergencies. It should include basic first aid supplies and prescriptions as recommended by the family physician.
Stock nonperishable food items for at least a seven day supply for the entire household. Don’t forget pets.
Store important papers and valuables in waterproof packaging where they can be easily reached if you plan to take these items with you. Fill the car with gas and make sure you have batteries, flashlights, portable radios, battery lantern, matches, and ice chest,
Make sure there is enough bottled water to satisfy a minimum two quarts per person per day and a seven-day non-perishable food supply. Have masking tape on hand for windows and glass doors.
