POIPU — A 6-year-old Eleele girl drowned Sunday at a Poipu swimming pool.
The accident occurred at the Club at Kukuiula. The pool was reportedly being used for an employee event attended by nearly 500 guests.
The victim, Trixia Mich Soliva, was the granddaughter of Club at Kukuiula employee Roger Soliva, who brought her to the family day picnic.
“We are grief stricken,” Kukuiula Development Company President Brent Herrington said. “It feels like we have lost a member of the Kukuiula ohana, and obviously, we feel the most profound sadness and express our condolences to the Soliva family.”
According to county communications, Kauai Fire Department personnel from the Koloa station responded to the call at about 12:15 p.m. Witnesses observed a child underwater at the pool and called 911, according to the report.
The bystanders pulled the child from the water and were performing CPR when firefighters and medics arrived. Rescuers continued attempts to resuscitate the girl, including use of an automated external defibrillator.
Those attempts, county spokesperson Sarah Blane said, were unsuccessful.
The girl was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Trixia Mich Soliva was the daughter of Michael Soliva and Cherry Soliva.
Kukuiula is a tight-knit group, said Herrington, who added that the company is conducting meetings to help people through the grieving process.
“There are many people who care about this family,” he said. Life’s Bridges Director Gina Kaulukukui said she will be meeting with the family of the girl. The organization provides support to family and friends of victims.
This is Kauai’s second fresh water drowning and the 13th overall in 2013.
