KALAHEO — DJ Pabre finished with nine points to lead Westside Division 3 to a 26-20 win over Papalina Monday.

Denez Haley came up with five second-half points, TJ Apilado added six points to the win, and Joel Soriano marked a pair in each half for his four points.
This was the first of three regularly-scheduled games in the Kaulupono Basketball summer league, which enters its final week of games.
“The girls divisions are pretty much wrapped up until Saturday when the playoffs begin,” said Coach Bobby Kamakele of Kaulupono. “The boys play this week before starting playoffs Saturday. There will be no games scheduled Thursday, the Fourth of July.”
Papalina, coming off the 2013 Merv Lopes Kauai Hoops Classic, featured balanced scoring in its effort, Nick Herbig dropping one of two three-balls marked by Papalina.
Blake Lewis, Ryan Banasihan and Taylon Yadao each added four points and a three-ball in the second half by Noah Ruiz rounded out the effort.
With the tight games of the Merv Lopes still singing in the minds of the players, David Simon, coach of Hanakila-Black said Kalaheo had a nail-biter of its own when the blackshirts from the Hanalei and Kilauea area started peppering the hoops from the outside.
“The balls had the range,” said Steven Carvalho, one of the referees who said he did eight games at the Merv Lopes on Sunday. “They just weren’t dropping tonight.”
Hanakila-Black dropped a 15-18 heartbreaker to Eastside Warriors Division 4 boys, coached by Matt Gonsalves.
Tiger Fugett picked up all six of his game points in the first half to lead the Eastside win. He was followed by Samuel Mokuahi who dropped a bucket in each half for his four points. Laakea Gonsalves, Alakai Gonsalves, Vincent Noguchi and Chasen Tumamao each ended with two.
Coming back from a 10-5 halftime deficit, Hanakila was able to pull to within three points late in the game, but being outnumbered on the bench, five players to Eastside’s 10 players, the effort came up short.
Chasen Hawelu and Jesse Zemmel topped the Hanakila effort with five points apiece followed by Hero Raza and Chris Pangdan each adding second half pairs. The tail end of a charity pair for Jonah Flores rounded out the effort.
The third game of the night was forfeited by Team Central to the Kauai Ballers, Division 3 when there was an insufficient number of players to start the game.
Playoff games for the Kaulupono summer league start Saturday at both the Kapaa High School gym and the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, the first tipoff starting at 8 a.m.
The playoffs continue Monday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 6 p.m.
