LIHUE — The No. 2 seed Wreckage will meet top-seeded Kings for the title of the 18 and Over Men’s league Friday in Kapaa.
The showdown was set up following play Friday night at Kalaheo Neighborhood Center when the Wreckage got past the Westside Pride, 68-59, and the Kings defeated the Kauai Athletic Club, 73-47.
Following a 14-14 deadlock at the end of the first quarter, the Wreckage surged to a 33-29 edge at the break, building on that edge for the final behind five three-balls launched in the second half.
Randy Vicoy, finishing with high point honors for Wreckage with 12 points, fired off two treys in the third quarter, being joined by Jordan Flores launching a pair from outside the three-point mark en route to his game-total 11 points.
Jason Poe-Hooikaika led the Wreckage with three treys, two in the opening frame and one in the final frame.
Both teams fired off 19 field goals, and six free throw points, the difference coming in the three-balls as the Wreckage ended with eight and Westside Pride settled for five, four coming in the second half.
Desmond Moniz, getting high-point honors for Westside Pride, finished with two treys in the fourth quarter toward his game-total 14 points. Other three-ball launchers included Jeff Kataoka firing off his trey in the first quarter, and Reynante Villanueva launched one in the third frame and one in the fourth quarter.
Kainalu Simao added 13 points and Villanueva finished with a dozen point to round out the Westside leaderboard.
The Kings, top seeded in the Kauai Youth Basketball Association 18 and Over league, left the floor after pushing the button on nine treys led by Olin Claussen producing three treys, one each in the first, third and fourth quarters.
Tab Matsumoto, finishing with high-point honors for the Kings, launched three second-half treys, two in the third and one in the fourth quarters. Lance Miyashiro launched a trey in the third quarter, joined by Chris Bracewell who marked a trey in the third frame en route to his game-total 11 points. Emery Souza also launched a trey, his coming in the final frame.
Joining Bracewell in the scoring leaderboard, Tony Brewer finished with 11 points as the top-seeded team finished with 21 field goals and was 4-for-7 at the charity stripe.
This compares with the Kauai Athletic Club, which, despite being out-numbered five to 11, stalemated the contest 10-10 at the end of the opening frame and stayed close, 25-24 at the break.
But the Kings surged forward in the second half, fueled by the three-balls, eight coming in the second half.
The KAC, fueled by Spam Lindsey finishing with a game-high 22 points, finished with 14 field goals, was 7-for-11 at the charity stripe, and fired off four three-balls, Spam getting three, one each in the second, third, and fourth quarters.
R.J. Pillos added 10 points for the KAC, and Greg Ragsac fired off the fourth three-ball.
Friday night, the Westside Pride will meet KAC for third place on a 6 p.m. tipoff followed by the title game between the Kings and Wreckage starting at 7 p.m. at the Kapaa High School gym.
