LIHUE — Four of Kauai’s high school rodeo contestants are in Rock Springs, Wyo., for the National High School Rodeo, which runs through Saturday.
Cheyenne Tannery, Kira Blackstad-Pimental, Austin Wellington and Randy Cremer are representing not only Kauai’s High School Rodeo Association, but the State of Hawaii at the Wyoming event.
The top four places in the state, earned by the qualified Kauai rodeo participants, were selected to represent Hawaii at the national rodeo.
Tannery will be riding in pole bending and barrel racing events while Blackstad-Pimental will be doing pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping and the dally team roping events.
Wellington and Cremer will team up for the dally team roping event.
The National High School is one of the biggest rodeo events in the world with more than 1,500 high school contestants participating from the United States, Canada and Australia, states the NHSRA website.
Athletes at the national High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo., compete for national titles, prizes and scholarships.
Boys events at the national rodeo include bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping and cutting.
Girls events include breakaway roping, barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, cutting, team roping and the NHSRA Queen contest. Visit www.nhsra.com for more information.
