LIHUE — Signs announcing the road closure of Eiwa Street at the Rice Street junction were put in place Monday. The closure is expected to last six months and is part of the Lihue Civic Center master plan.
With the closure, no through traffic will be allowed on Eiwa Street while construction work is taking place.
Patrons wanting to access the Lihue Civic Center, Historic County Building, the Kauai Museum and the state building are able to reach their destinations by using the intersection at Hardy Street.
A county crew was monitoring traffic Monday.
The modification work on Eiwa Street and the Lihue Civic Center parking lots is being done to improve access to public services. The work consists of several projects.
In addition to the Road Closed barricades, which cross Eiwa Street, advisories warning of sidewalk closure as well as constricted traffic along Rice Street fronting the First Hawaiian Bank, Lihue Branch, the Lihue Post Office and the Kauai Museum appeared while work started in the Lihue Civic Center parking lot.
Enhancements to the Lihue Civic Center, which is expected to be completed by early 2014, include the moving of the egress to the Lihue Civic Center parking lot to line up with Kele Street. A crosswalk is planned to link the Lihue Civic Center with the Lihue Post Office.
Monday, workers from Earthworks Pacific had already dug up a portion of the parking lot and concrete has been poured for the sidewalk, which lines the entrance to the Lihue Civic Center, Piikoi Building.
During the construction, Americans With Disabilities Act improvements will be done, including additional parking spaces and walkways that encompasses connections to Hardy and Umi streets and the bus stops.
Recently, work was done in the former loading dock area of the now-closed Big Save store resulting in re-striping of the safety zones as well as the addition of 31 new parking spaces.
Motorists are advised to use extra caution, observe the speed limit and posted signs in the area while work is taking place. Call the Building Division at 241-4854 for more information.
