LIHUE — George Mukai of Kapaa submitted 70 items for consideration, but could only muster second place in the fruit and vegetable judging.
Mukai, who also helps lead the Kauai Anthurium Club, was hopeful for top honors in the High Point judging at the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, Kauai Fruit and Vegetable Show at the Kauai County Farm Fair.
But despite the large number of entries, Mukai settled for second place with 272 points, the top honor going to Kauai Kunana, the Wooton Family Farm, who garnered 340 points in the judging.
Third place went to Elia Lagoc with 90 points, who beat out Linda Yoshii by just three points.
Scion Manera and Jaime Yasutake finished in a tie for fifth with 83 points apiece.
Best in Show honors went to Harry Yamamoto’s mango, which earned Best Fruit while his Winter Melon squash garnered Best Vegetable honors.
Gladys Oyama, a second-place winner in the tomato judging, earned top honors in the special vegetable judging, this year’s vegetable being the Roma tomato.
Overall, there were 450 fruit and vegetable entries vying for honors, the entries coming from 65 participants.
At the adjacent Garden Island Orchid Society exhibit, Deedee Gorospe earned Best in Show honors, repeating for the second year in a row.
The Kauai Anthurium Club Best in Show honors was awarded to Valli Sendan’s “Madame Pele,” a red obake variety.
The Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair continues for its final day, Sunday when the Garden Island Federal Credit Union hosts its Family Fun Sunday with gates opening at noon until 11 p.m.
On tap is the Keiki Building Contest using Lego bricks starting at noon at the Kauai Association for Family and Community Education Home Show, the New Hope Kauai Sunday Service starting at 12:30 at the entertainment tent.
The 4-H Petting Zoo opens from 12:30 to 2 p.m. for its final run before the livestock areas close down at 2:30 p.m.
Commercial booths close at 5 p.m., and Entrance to the fair is free after 6 p.m.
