LIHUE — No one made the $25,000 hole-in-one, but the YWCA of Kauai was a big winner Sunday during the “Never Forget Sandy G” golf tournament.
“This is the biggest field we’ve had since the tournament started,” said Renae Hamilton, the director of the YWCA of Kauai. “There are nearly a hundred golfers out there.”
Sandra “Sandy” Galas, the daughter of Larry and Toshi Mendonca, was a victim of violence after she was discovered murdered in car fronting her home in Eleele on Jan. 25, 2006.
Since then, Galas’ family has partnered with the YWCA of Kauai to help keep the memory of Galas alive while bringing awareness of the need to end violence against women.
A portion of the proceeds from Sunday’s golf tournament will help fund the special garden fronting the new YWCA Women’s Center grounds.
Had a golfer earned the $25,000 purse for being the first hole-in-one at the tournament, one half of the proceeds would be shared with the YWCA of Kauai, the other half going to the golfer.
“I only play in two tournaments a year,” said Dustin Moises. “The other is the Contractors Association of Kauai tournament, and unfortunately, it was played Saturday, so this might be rough.”
Kaina McCallum headed up the foursome of Team Kaina, which took first place in the tournament. Other members on the winning team included Mervin Chung, Brian Pezario and Ikaika Pezario.
Second place honors went to Team Finer followed by Team Grip & Rip, Team Horoshko, and Team St. Regis.
