LIHUE — A reportedly unoccupied fishing boat capsized Friday night while anchored off Kalalau Beach on Kauai’s North Shore.
“I don’t know how in the world this thing could have gotten turned over at night time,” said Terry Lilley, a Hanalei biologist and videographer who spent the weekend at the beach. “There was no wind. No surf.”
Although the Kauai Fire Department did not respond to the incident, county spokeswoman Sarah Blane confirmed there were no occupants on the boat at the time of the incident.
“The owner made private arrangements to salvage it,” she wrote in an email. “He was apparently on the beach at the time and came back in the morning to find the boat capsized.”
A phone call Tuesday morning to the U.S. Coast Guard operations center in Honolulu confirmed that the Guard did respond, but that the situation had already been taken care of by the time they arrived.
Lilley said he awoke early Saturday morning and spotted the catamaran upside down.
“We nicknamed the boat ‘Two Orcas,’” he said, “because it looked two killer whales coming out of the water.”
The boat was towed back to Hanalei on Sunday by local resident Joe Licona, according to Lilley.
“The whole thing was really quite interesting for everyone to watch,” Lilley said.
