LIHUE — The Kauai Independent Food Bank was named recipient of $2,000 after Chef Rey Montemayor was judged tops Thursday.
Montemayor, representing the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club, was one of five entries in the Kauai Coffee Celebrity Chef’s Cookoff for Charity during the opening night at the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair at Vidinha Stadium.
Each of the five chefs, representing eateries from the different parts of the island, competed for votes from diners’ palalettes, the highest vote-getter earning the contribution to a nonprofit of their choosing.
Montemayor got help from Kauai Marriott Executive Chef Guy Higa who was busy dipping Kekaha shrimp for the tempura contribution toward Montemayor’s Mauka, Makai Slider, which included Kauai Coffee Rubbed Kaneshiro Roasted Pork with Smokey Chipotle Coffee Barbecue Sauce, Kekaha Shrimp tempura with Spicy Coffee Aioli and Espresso Panna Colla, Coffee Jello shooter for dessert.
The public was invited, for a $30 donation, to sample the plates of some of Kauai’s top chefs who utilized Kauai Grown and raised farm ingredients.
The event was sponsored by Kauai Coffee, which took advantage of the gathering to unveil its new Rooster Alarm premium coffee, served up by Shannon King, and joining the other premium coffee offerings, including Poipu Estate, Peaberry and Kauai Sunrise.
Kauai Coffee is also available at the Lihue Pop Warner food booth, which will be featuring a new flavor for each night of the farm fair.
