NAWILIWILI — A 21-year-old Kalaheo man was shot and killed by police in Nawiliwili Friday night during a confrontation with four police officers.
His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
At around 10:40 p.m., police were conducting a routine check for criminal activity in the Nawiliwili jetty area, according to county officials.
The officers came upon a gathering of adults and juveniles, including the Kalaheo man.
The 21-year-old was in a parked vehicle holding two firearms.
The officers told the man to drop his weapons, and the man threw one of the guns out of the car, but held on to the other, according to a county news release.
The officers repeatedly told the man to drop his weapon, and the man pointed the firearm toward the officers, according to the release.
“To prevent their death or serious bodily injury, the officers fired their weapons to stop the threat,” the release states. “The man died following the shooting.”
None of the witnesses and police officers at the scene were injured.
The officers involved in the incident have been placed on a mandatory three-day administrative leave as the investigation continues.
“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased,” said Kauai Police Chief Daryl Perry. “I want to assure the public that this shooting will be investigated completely and vigorously.”
