Kauai Muscle and Fitness, a family-owned, 24-hour access gym, opened its doors in Kapaa in 2009 with a simple mission — provide more for less.
Owners Jimmy and Alison Castillejos say they will carry that same business mindset over to their second location, scheduled to open in Lihue in September.
“For nearly four years, my wife and I have offered low membership rates,” Jimmy wrote in a statement. “Our objective was and still is to make a fitness facility that is affordable and welcoming to all socioeconomic classes and age groups in the community.”
The new 6,000-square-foot, two-story gym will be inside the Kuhio Business Center along Kuhio Highway. It will feature more than 20 cardio machines — including bicycles, ellipticals, steppers and treadmills — as well as powerlifting and pin-loaded equipment, free weights, showers, a supplement shop and TVs.
The Castillejos, along with friends and family, have spent the last several weeks unloading containers full of equipment from the Mainland.
Just as they were when the Castillejos opened the Kapaa gym, Jimmy recognizes times are tough.
“Customers thank us regularly for keeping gym memberships reasonably priced for them,” he wrote. “Economic times are still rough and to hear such appreciation from members is very satisfying.”
For this very reason, Jimmy and his wife are excited to open the second gym, and offer their services to a larger portion of the island.
Both Jimmy and Alison are passionate about fitness and exercise, and enjoy seeing others develop and share that interest. In fact, both work more than 50 percent of gym hours, which Jimmy says has contributed to their success.
“It is most important to us that we maintain a family friendly atmosphere that is just as supportive for first-time, inexperienced gym members as it is for the lifelong gymgoer,” he wrote. “Our belief is that if you take care of your community, they will take care of you.”
Since 2009, Kauai Muscle and Fitness has continued to offer reduced sign-up rates and a guarantee of no gimmicks or sales, according to Jimmy.
“The goal was to give people the Taj Mahal of fitness centers and not to use our shoestring budget as an excuse to offer a bottom-of-the-barrel gym just because we charged our patrons less,” he wrote. “We knew we could win customers’ business this way.”
Memberships at the Kapaa location cost $40 per person, $69 per couple, $38 for seniors and students, and $80 per family. Due to the larger location in Lihue, rates will increase slightly, between $3 and $5 per month, depending on the type of membership.
Members will have 24-hour access, 365 days a year to both facilities, Jimmy wrote.
Kauai Muscle and Fitness’ Kapaa gym is at 951 Kipuni Way. The new Lihue location will be at 3-3215 Kuhio Highway.
