LIHUE — From the second floor of the Moikeha Building, Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. broke into song Monday.
Members of the Hanapepe and Lihue chapters of the Kauai Ballroom Dance Club succumbed to the a capella performance as couples whirled and twirled on the floor of the Moikeha Building rotunda, signalling the start of lunch.
“This was totally unplanned,” Carvalho said. “I guess I’ll be doing some numbers at the gala, too.”
The Hanapepe and Lihue chapters of the Kauai Ballroom Dance Club accepted a mayoral proclamation celebrating nine years of ballroom dancing on Kauai on Oct. 5.
Oct. 5 is the date the Kauai Ballroom Dance Club will celebrate its gala Anniversary Ball at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club in Nawiliwili, from 5:30 to 11 p.m.
Highlights of the evening include a buffet dinner, routine dance performances by the Hanapepe and Lihue chapter dancers, and guest performances from 808 Dance Magic, a group from Honolulu, said Glenda Tamashiro.
Line dancing and general ballroom dancing will round out the evening’s entertainment, which carries the theme “Save the Last Dance for Me.”
Tickets at $55 each are available for the evening, which opens with no-host cocktails and dancing at 5:30 p.m. The evening’s program starts at 7:30 p.m.
The Kauai Ballroom Dance Club is sponsored by the County of Kauai, Department of Parks and Recreation.
In addition to being a fun activity, dancing provides many health benefits including flexibility, strength, endurance and a sense of well being.
