LIHUE — Hundreds of people took advantage of the clear weather to enjoy the 35th annual Labor Day Breakfast hosted by the Lihue United Church.
“Last year, we ended up serving more than 500 meals,” said Janel Patterson, chair of this year’s breakfast. “This year, we planned for at least 600 meals, but I’m sure we’ll be serving more than that amount.”
Patterson said this year’s breakfast benefited the St. Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church Loaves and Fishes food pantry program, which provides food for the needy.
The meals were served at the Lihue United Church Parish Hall, the serving area extended by quick tents to allow more shaded areas for the overflow crowd.
“I got take-out meals so we can enjoy them in a quieter area,” said Marly Madayag, who threaded the row of cars parked on the church’s lawn.
Pastor Wesley Elmore, who ran the Kauai Marathon Sunday, said the youth group also hosted a car wash for people to have their vehicles washed while they enjoyed breakfast with entertainment provided by community members.
“The youth had the car wash last year, but weren’t sure they were going to do it this year,” Elmore said. “This was kind of last-minute and getting tagged onto the breakfast.”
Lois Ricciardi, director of the Kauai Chorale, said the breakfast has grown tremendously. She noted the presence of other churches and their leaders from the community and the fellowship among all the people enjoying each other’s company.
“I’m so amazed at how generous people are and how willing they are to share,” she said.
